I would put Vera at the top of your list. It’s a little more straight than New Tricks, but very good.
For lightweight you can’t go wrong with Father Brown, and the related Sister Boniface.

That’s right! I’d forgotten about that one.
Bumping to announce that we finished New Tricks and apparently our next series is… Monk.
Not that there’s anything wrong with Monk, but I’ve probably seen them all already either in first run or rerun and would have preferred something I haven’t seen before. Oh well, maybe there’s still time to take control of this bus before it runs into a ditch.
Turns out my wife also did not want “Monk” to be our new series. (She’s seen most of them from when they had Monk all day Tuesdays on H&I.) So last night we watched a couple episodes of Father Brown. Not sure if it’s a keeper, but at least it’s something different.
I’ve not watched New Tricks but Dennis Waterman rose to fame in Minder, which was really great when I watched it on prime time in the 1980s. Not sure how it would stack up now or whether its available on any service that’s useful.
