My wife and I have been watching this wonderful show for about 2 months now. We’re on season 6. We’re watching it via IMDB on Amazon Prime off a Firestick.
One little complaint, the theme song, sounds way to much like End of the Line by the Travelling Wilburys.
Between the local PBS station and Amazon Prime, I’ve watched the entire series. About my only cavil (I can’t call it a complaint) is that there are times when the character-based plot seems to take precedence over the crime-solving plot. But even when that’s the case, it (the character plot) is so damn enjoyable that I find myself not really caring whether they solve the crime or not.
Yes also via Prime.
Excellent production.
BBC is to be commended for its outstanding programming compared to here in the US.
But they do solve it.
You have a fair way to go!
Not sure I agree about character development.
One of it’s charms IMHO is that once you get to know them they virtually don’t change throughout the series until Pullman leaves in series 10.
Pullam is BIC (bird in charge) and has way bigger issues to manage than just having shot that bloody dog.
Jack is the stereotypical straight Pommie detective and obsessed about the death of his wife
Jerry is just on the angels side of dodgy/bent (I’m a naughty boy Sandra, not a bastard)
Brian is the obsessive kook who is mostly harmless … and my favourite.
IMHO the best episode is 2.8 “17 Years of Nothing” but the pilot takes a fair bit to beat.
Pullman leaves?
Thanks for the spoiler alert.
She is my favorite character.
We watched the first two minutes and my wife said, “I’m out!” as soon as the dog was shot. Same reason we’ve never seen the John Wick movies.
However, their external issue’s propel into ???
We’ve been binging this too, and are deep in season 11.
I too prefer it when they don’t go too deep into character life, and stick with the crime solving. I think the (original) cast of characters is a really good mix. In the early season they make a bit of hay out of them being out of touch with more modern technology/science in crime fighting (hence the premise of the show), but they seem to drop that eventually.
After about season 8-ish they start moving actors out and replacing them. Sorry to say, the new characters are just not as compelling to me.
I’m only on season 6 but as it is British I fully expect almost everyone to leave the show at some point and I am surprised so far no one has.
One of my favorites is Death in Paradise, changeover in that show is greater than Doctor Who.
We started watching recently on Prime/BritBox, but are not bingeing… My father in law comes over to visit on Sunday afternoon/evenings for dinner and then we watch an episode or two. And our watching has taken a bit of a hit during the tail end of the football season. So I think we are still early into S2. I guess we’ve got some catching up to do!
One thing that bothers me about the whole “shooting the dog” kerfuffle in the pilot - everybody acts like she deliberately shot an innocent dog, but if I remember right, the dog was intentionally let loose during the raid, and the shooting was in self defense. Am I misremembering how the whole thing went down? Or is just that it’s more of a P.R. disaster than a justified shooting?
I feel behind the times as I am only on season 2. But yes, the dog was deliberately let off leash to attack at will.
New Tricks is one of my favourite shows, I must have seen the whole series at least 4 times now.
It’s currently being shown in the UK on the Drama satellite channel, those who are only near the beginning of the series are in for some great stories.
I don’t have any of the streaming services its on so I’m limited to watching on PBS, which I do whenever I notice it’s on.
I loved the episode in which he starts hanging around with conspiracy theorists as part of an investigation. That was like watching The Lone Gunmen again.
My recollection is that the dog’s handler dropped the leash in response to Pullman’s “drop everything!” order, and the dog attacked because that’s what it had been trained to do. He (the handler) seemed to have a bit of a “you asked for it” expression when he dropped the leash.
But again, that’s a recollection. I’d have to go back and watch it again.
As for the replacement cast, while none of them quite measured up to the originals (especially Brian), they did grow on me after a while and would have done so even more given time. And I appreciated that the departing cast were given actual sendoffs, rather than disappearing except for a “he decided to move to Bermuda” reference in a later episode.
My takeaway, based on nothing more than musing, is that you have to start with the premise that in the UK, police officers are not prone to shoot at all at anything ever ever. MUCH different than in the US.
So, an officer firing is a BIG DEAL, and the fact that it was “only a dog” (even a potentially vicious attack dog) is grounds for much consternation. Again, MUCH different than in the US.
Far better than the CSI crap network offers
We watched up to season 11 or so. Not as much fun when the original characters left. The actor who played Jerry sang the theme, by the way. We saw another show with him in it where he went undercover as a singer to break up an IRA ring.
My favorite bit is when Jack drives Sandra to her high school reunion - which she doesn’t stay at long.
BTW Brian, a true nerd, is fine with technology. And the actress who plays his wife is actually married to the guy who played Jack.
If you mean the one with the airbase, (trying not to give anything away) I watched that one a couple of nights ago.
