Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Have you seen this new TV series titled, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”?

It stars Andy Samberg from SNL and Andre Braugher who is an excellent actor and I can’t understand what he is doing in this show.

I think it may be on some minor network. It doesn’t appear to be on one of the majors.

It is one of the strangest comedy sitcoms I have ever seen. On the one hand, it is extremely shabby. But on the other hand, there are some good moments.

The cast reflects this concept. It’s a show about a Brooklyn police precinct - probably Precinct number 99 and one of the female cops seems to be retarded. I can’t understand how she made it onto a national comedy sitcom. She may be Chelsea Peretti although I can’t be certain which one she is.

But I do want to watch see one of the early episodes which features Patton Oswalt. From the pictures of that episode, it looks like Oswalt will be a real hoot. I’m looking forward to that episode.

This sitcom is so bad that it may actually turn out to be watchable. But my first impressions are that it won’t be very watchable.

Has anyone else seen it?

I wonder how much of this is a whoosh ;).

I have seen it. I love it. One of the better comedies to come out in a while. Silly, witty, but definitely has some heart as well.

Oh, and its on FOX and just won the Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy and Andy Samberg just won Best Actor in a TV Comedy.

OK. Well, I suppose diff people have diff tastes in comedy sitcoms.

I would never have imagined it could win Best TV Comedy. Maybe that is a reflection of the state of TV sitcoms today?

But, I’m willing to admit that I could be wrong. If many people like it, then I will admit I’m wrong about it. After all, it’s just my opinion and if you like it, I take my hat off to you.

Thank you for the info.

Best new sitcom of the season, IMO, and a billion times better than its lead-in, “Dads” (not to mention every sitcom on CBS combined).

I’m sorry, I, literally, can no longer can hear or read the name Andy Samberg without hearing it my head as Samby Amberg or some other messed up version of his name. Doesn’t help that I don’t really care for him.

I watch it. I was surprised to see it beat out Big Bang Theory at the Golden Globes this year, but based only on this season, it deserved the win. It’s a quirky little show…not quite “Police Squad”, but not quite a “normal” sitcom, either.

I will try and watch it once more and see if it may grow on me.

Did anyone see the episode with Patton Oswalt? I’d really like to know how people feel about that. I’d love to see him join some TV sitcom. Sometimes he is great. But other times he is very strange and not very good.

If you’ve ever seen the movie he made about getting assaulted by some famous football player, that was just too strange for words. (again, just my opinion).

Also, does anyone know what is up with that one female detective who seems brain-damaged? Well, at least she seems that way to me.

She doesn’t seem to have any relationships with any of the other detectives. She just seems to have some throwaway lines and I just don’t get what is interesting about her.

This show is the opposite of shabby.

Yeah, I don’t get the “shabby” comment, either. Maybe the OP could give us examples of sitcoms he doesn’t consider shabby?

It’s the best new sitcom I’ve seen in several years, and the best police sitcom since Barney Miller.

I’ve decided that Andre Braugher’s character is in fact Frank Pembleton. I think it works just fine.

I thought it was shabby because the jokes seemed cheap to me. I think “cheap” and “shabby” are closely related in a sitcom.

But I would hope you will let me take another look and see if I change my mind on a second viewing.

I watched it expecting little, but was pleasantly surprised. The jokes aren’t always great, but it’s more about the characters. They aren’t supposed to be comedians, just sometimes-weird/sometimes-funny people doing their job and dealing with life. To me, it’s more like, “look at the so-and-so acting up again”, and how people react/deal with it. It’s also about WHY is so-and-so acting up, and how THEY deal with whatever’s bothering them.

If you watch several episodes, you start to get a sense of the characters, and that, more than any joke, drives the show.

Braugher’s stoic, stone faced, by the book, openly gay Captain Ray Holt serves as a comic foil to Samberg’s silly, immature, yet competent Detective Peralta.

Chelsea Peretti plays the civilian administrator. Sort of like a secretary/office manager to the precinct. She’s not “retarded”. Just sort of weird.

I’m coming to this opinion now. When I started this thread I had only watched the first few epis. But after watching about six, I’m beginning to appreciate the comedy that comes from the characters.

In the first episode, I think Gina only has one line and I figured there was something wrong with her. But after a few epis, I’m beginning to appreciate her more. I especially like the female characters.

It’s too bad they brought in some chars and only kept them for one episode. Like Gina’s friend - the psychic. The episode with the robot and the “Hurt Locker” approach to the toxic shoes was pretty funny.

I’ve watched it. I sort of like all the characters except for Andy Samberg, who, when he opens his mouth, I just want to punch in the face repeatedly.

I love this show. Andre Braugher kills me in almost every scene, and the entire supporting cast is really great - especially Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, and Joe Lo Truglio. It’s funny every week and it’s very silly without being stupid.

We (my wife and I) love this show, it’s one of the very few sitcoms we watch (Parks & Recreation is the other). Coincidentally, Patton Oswalt has guest starred on both, and I think he was funnier on P&R.

I was pleasantly surprised to see B99 get some Golden Globes love. It’s one of the best new sitcoms in quite a while. I love the theme music!

It’s not the standard sitcom format, maybe that’s why you think it looks shabby. That’s why I like it. I’m sooo tired of the “standard” sitcom look and format that was largely revived by Two and a Half Men and Big Bang.

My favorite new show, for sure. And who are you talking about being retarded? Chelsea Peretti’s awesome and one of the best characters on the show in my opinion.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about it. By far the best new show on TV this season and my favorite new sitcom in years.

I do like the show, and would watch it more often if you didn’t have to catch the tail end of the execrable Dads, which gives the original Dads a run for its money as the most terrible show ever to be on TV, something I never even thought possible.

In any case, Sandberg is definitely the weak link in the show, but once you learn to tolerate him, the show is very good. And his jokes are often funny; it’s just his delivery that stomps on the humor. Braugher is excellent and his presence damps down Sandberg’s over-manic performance.
