Brooklyn 99 - does it get better?

I mean, I like it, it’s just that Peralta is such a over-priviledged white guy in this show (s1, 10 episodes in) that it’s painful to watch.

All the other characters are pretty good, however, but Jake? Sadly, he’s the focus of the show and is very little other than irritating.

So… does he get better? Is there a tone shift in S2 that I can look forward to? Or should I just start another program?

Peralta can be either/or/both Latino and white. Would it help If he were an over-privelaged Latino guy instead?

Who knows? In the show I’m watching, he comes off like a privileged white guy jerk.

What I want to know is… does his irritating behavior continue?

I think the show becomes more of an ensemble, so the other characters are featured. But if you’ve watched the first ten episodes and don’t like it, I see no reason you should continue.

I find it ‘pretty good’ - a lot of the writing is good, the other characters far more relatable, and there is at least one laugh-out-loud moment per episode.

It’s the Peralta shenanigans which are wearing out my welcome. It’s just too f-in much. Chaining himself to Holt and throwing away the key. Causing everyone to lose their weekend because he ‘knows’ someone is guilty and detained him prior to any evidence being gathered. That whole, silly ‘fight with the firemen’ episode.

Yeah, yeah, I “really should relax”, but still- there’s suspension of disbelief and then there’s eye-rolling, and Peralta’s antics put me on the side of eye-rolling.

You know the show is a comedy, right? He’s supposed to be a bit of a jackass. But also a genuinely talented detective. I’m not sure what you’re expecting to get out of it.

If you’ve seen one episode you’ve basically seen them all. If you haven’t liked it so far that’s unlikely to change.

It definitely finds it’s legs over the first one or two seasons, but it doesn’t change a whole lot. Or at least their characters don’t change. There’s not going to be any Michael Scott style 180 when the writers realize they’re going too far with their main character.
If you don’t like it after 10 episodes, you may want to cut your losses.

The Peralta shenanigans will only ramp up. If that’s bugging you enough to consider stopping, it’s not going to get better. You have a Halloween Heist every season. The safe house with Kevin. And pretty much every episode that involves Doug Judy or Adrian Pimento. All those things, more or less, go out of their way to 1 up themselves every time.
Most of the stuff Gina and Charles do aren’t exactly subtle either (you just drank CONCRETE!!)

It’s a great show, but it may very well not be for you.
Try Schitt’s Creek.

It’s basically just Andy Samberg being Andy Samberg.

I dunno. Jake Peralta seems a tad more woke than the guy with his dick in a box.

At least the Boyle/Lois stuff goes away after the first season

FWIW, I actually disagree with the premise that Peralta is just an immature over-privileged white dude. He engages in a lot of shenanigans, which is good for comedy purposes, but his character is far from one-dimensional. I actually think B99 is somewhat revolutionary for the way it portrays adult relationships within a sitcom. Peralta and Boyle unambiguously love each other as best friends and are completely sincere about it. And unlike the typical cool-guy/nerd friendship depicted in comedies (think Zack and Screech) the relationship is not one-sided.

Also Fire Marshall Boone is a goober.

Yeah, I like Boyle and Jake’s relationship (and the show in general). Boyle’s crush of Rosa was somewhat creepy, and I’m glad they moved away from it. Jake is over the top sometimes - but it’s pretty clear that his messed-up childhood has a lot to do with that.

I just watched the season 3 finale and I’m loving the show. I really like the show’s style of absurd humor though and the characters are a lot of fun. If you don’t like it after 10 episodes you’re not going to like it after 10 more. Cut your losses and find something else to watch.

I love the show (the Halloween Heists are awesome). It’s definitely a comedy, and things are a little over the top. There’s almost a surreal element to it. That said, the show also explores very real human emotions and relationships. For me, it strikes a rare balance between the reality of being human and comedy.

What does his skin color have to do with anything?? He had a tough upbringing and is probably the worst adjusted member in the very begininnng
That said…I dunno?? I thought it hit the ground running.
Edit: Ohhhhh does he grow up?? Is that the Q?

Yes.

I agree. If Jake Peralta is an over-privileged white guy then so is every other white male character in television. And maybe that’s true. I’m a white guy and I’m aware I’ve avoided problems other people who aren’t white guys have had to face. But that just makes Peralta a realistic character. I’ve never felt the writers are saying that Peralta deserves any privileges he has.

If the OP isn’t able to enjoy fictional depictions of American society where white men have an advantage then I’d advice him to turn off his television and sell it. And stop going to the movies and reading books as well.

I was unaware that over-privileged was synonymous with immature. The immaturity is overlooked somewhat because he makes up for it with heart, hard work and talent as a detective. Where is the privilege?

I think the privilege idea comes from Peraltas perception that everything has to go his way and it usually does (at least at the beginning). But I do believe he surprisingly does have character growth within the series - the examples of how he handles friendship, relationship and also his desperate need for a father figure do get explored.

Also, after the first few episodes he starts failing occasionally, sometimes as a direct result of his character flaws. The show also starts to address his obsession with the job and with solving cases, and how unhealthy it can be.
