Alone on History Channel

Anyone watching this season of Alone? 7 teams dropped off on a bear, cougar and wolf populated island in Canada?
The contestants prep for weeks before going extreme camping to see who will last the longest, winner gets half a million.

Prepped for weeks, drop out on the first day or second day. Kills me each time, they pound it into their heads that there are bears etc then they get there and reality hits and bam they tap out. This year teams of 2 family members and if one taps they are both out.

I won’t even camp in my backyard as in the past 10 years have had 2 bears (that I have seen) chances are they are no where around now but a bear is a bear.

I haven’t watched any of this seasons episodes yet (I like to let a few queue up on my PVR), but I loved the previous seasons.

Last season the show took place in Patagonia, i think the weather was similar but they were all situated around a lake as compared to the ocean. In the past contestants had much more success getting food from the ocean compared to the lake.

I do have to say depending on where a contestant gets dropped off totally contributes to how well they do overall. Some people have a creek or river of fresh water right beside them, others have to hike to find it. Some people have nice flat estuaries to set their fishing nets up in, others have their nets destroyed by waves and floatsam.

I’m curious to see how well this season goes with pairs of people. It’s called Alone for a reason. So far every season the contestants are lasting longer and longer, usually one of the major reasons they tap out is because of lack of social interaction or they miss their family.

I can’t wait to binge this season. I think I’ll start watching it the week of July 10th.

Cheers!

I watch it and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love the concept but it has fallen into the same hackneyed bullshit as all reality shows these days. Crying, pissing, moaning. And I realize that some people have to go home for there to be a winner but damn, dropping out the first day in situation that you knew fully well in advance and presumably have watched the previous 3 season of? Pathetic. It makes me sad for the contestants that missed out because these losers took their spot.

What’s with all the crybabying about being alone? It’s the name of the damn show! and all of the moaning about missing your loved ones… ugh. It’s not it’s like years, it’s two months tops. Summer camp can last longer than that. And what about all of the service men who are on tours or business people who work out of town?

<stepping down from soapbox…>

Still, it’s a good time killer and I enjoy watching how the ones who don’t quit cope with the weather and all. Regarding the bears, I can understand how it might be a little intimidating but the danger is greatly exaggerated imo.

To those of you who haven’t seen it and plan on binge watching, do it in order. They get better every year and going backwards (for us) was a little disappointing.

I’ve noticed that the locations they are dropped off are sometimes key. Thanks for reminding me it was Patagonia last season as on this season I was wondering where all the bamboo came from last year…:smack:
One team has a brother combo and one brother has a new baby at home 10 months old… I figure he will be one of the ones that tap do to “I miss my family so much and am being selfish doing this…” Like one last year.

In the first series most of them were gone in the first week or two. One of them heard a wolf. A few saw bears. One lost his flint and one gave himself kidney failure by drinking salt water full of rotten fish.

The final four did okay. Lasted quite a while. I think most people guessed who would win, as he was the one who seemed most at home and who had the least trouble finding food. The one who came second lasted a long time too, of course, but he never stopped complaining. Lived in a tarpaulin tent exposed to the wind and the rain, so he couldn’t sleep a lot. Ate nothing but the occasional mouse.

By the second series they all knew what they were doing and I don’t think anyone quit in the first week. At least one specifically mentioned having learned from watching the first series. I assume they did some more psychological testing to make sure no-one would quit because they saw a bear.

In fact they did so well that the third series was moved to Patagonia so previous series would be of little use.

Now they’ve got pairs. I think the first ones to quit seemed like the one who gave up never really wanted to be there. That’s the problem with pairs, one might just be doing it for the other and give up quite easily. They are alone, though, as they dropped the pairs off ten miles from each other, and so far none of them have found their partners.

It’s hard to improve upon this. You nailed it.

It’s pretty funny that all of these folks provide their backstories about how they camp and live off the land all of the time, how they have skills to trap and fish and make spearheads, and they always look forward to periods of deprivation and are completely prepared. Then they tap out within days, after whining that they’re alone and it’s haaaaard.

You can pretty much tell who’s going to make it. It’s usually the people who don’t whine and cry very much; the types who mostly roll with the punches, have tenacity and a sense of (warped) humor. They don’t get too upset with obstacles.

So, will the guy complaining about climbing yet another hill be the next to tap out? He already sounds discouraged. I don’t pretend to be the outdoors type, but I would look at the upcoming hill and say, “Dammit, another frickin’ hill! Sigh. Oh well, better get started.”

One group is going to walk away with $500k; it would take a lot to make me give up that kind of money so easily.

I too have a love/hate relationship with this show, but it’s a bit interesting to watch. I completely missed the Patagonia season; gonna have to check it out.
