Alright G-d, We understand Johnny Cash, but...

a link about ritter’s role as the voice of clifford

Oh, relax. Nobody cares about your Travails with the Trolls, or the reasons behind your every typo.

It’s the curse of Saturday Night Live. Any SNL cast member who has sex with Gene Wilder will die young.

    Gilda Radner.
    John Belushi.
    Phil Hartman.
    Chris Farley.

Back To John Ritter-
John Ritter was funny. He shined in even the crappiest material. Hooperman surprised me. He was a fine dramatic actor as well. His performance in the already mentioned Buffy episode was amazing. He played a character who was filled with evil and hatred-and he did it frighteningly well.

 That was him?
:frowning:

John Ritter also provided the voice of the hero in the animated film The Flight Of Dragons.

I haven’t been able to find a copy in years

FECK!

Clifford was…sniff…HIM?

FECK!

I was distraught over Johnny’s passing, and shocked and confused that John Ritter has died. Now I’m merely queasy about the idea of Chris Farley and Gene Wilder in bed together. I’m of a mind to thank you for that, Doc.

Psst! DocCathode, there are brand new VHS copies of “Flight of Dragons” all over Ebay, some for under $12. I just bought one last week.

And then this week I hear John Ritter died. I’ll miss you Gorbash/Sir Peter. :frowning:

My brother asked who John Ritter was… all I know is that he was an actor. He was more affected by Johnny Cash’s death… the Man in Black will be missed.

As will all the other dead celebs in this thread, of course.

Ratty

Thank you. I should have thought of Ebay. However, I do my best to avoid the place. After discovering that collections of glass eyes were sold almost every week, I realized that Ebay could easily end up taking all my time and money.

DocC- I am so glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I read that.

Jeff Buckley’s dead?

Surprised I haven’t seen Elvis mentioned yet. I, too, will greatly miss John Ritter.

I have a trivia mention: Does anyone remember him as his short-stint as a preacher on Little House On The Prairie? I know the main one was Rev. Alden, but Ritter was the preacher when the ingalls went looking for gold in another state. I wish they still made shows like that…

I miss Johny Cash, too, although I have never been a big fan of country music. I liked his cross-over stuff.

I never knew that Jews spelled God G-D???

Peace Lady

Considering the purpose of the Straight Dope, the fact that search function won’t work on why, Jews, or G-d, and that explaining this is unlikely to hijack the thread, I’ll tackle this.

Judaism holds the name of G-d to be sacred. Any text containing it must be treated specially. If you drop a sacred text, you pick it up and kiss it. If a sacred text is too worn or damaged for use, it is buried in a special ceremony. More, the name of G-d must never be erased.

Abbreviating the name of G-d is an easy way to avoid all this. Text containing G-d, or one of the equivalent Hebrew abbreviations, is not sacred. It can be tossed out like old newspaper. If you avoid writing the name of G-d, you never have to worry about erasing or defacing it.

Many Jewish scholars have ruled that characters on a computer screen and files on hard drives or floppy disks lack a kind of reality and permanence. Thus, even the most observant Jew will not always use the hyphen in their posts. However if a post is printed on paper, all the laws and traditions apply. So, some Jews will use G-d, as a precaution should their post be printed.

Re-Little House
Several stories mentioned Ritter’s role as a preacher on The Waltons. Was he on both programs or are you confusing the two?

I think you’re confusing “Little House” with the “Waltons.” Understandable. I first fell in love with John when he was the minister on the Waltons. That lead to his starring role on “Three’s Company.”

For those of us who want another chance to see John Ritter in his many memorable T.V. roles, including the Waltons’ Reverend Forwick (the role that made him one of my favorites) TVLand will be airing tribute episodes all day Sunday. Watch for his surprise appearance on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the episode in which Ted and Georgette get married.

Also, Nick at Nite will be showing tribute episodes of Three’s Company on Monday night.

---- —, ------ ----.

Hi,

No, I am definately not confusing the two. I actually have that episode (s) taped, and watched them last night. I liked the Walton’s but didn’t always watch it like Little House, so maybe I missed that part.

By the way, how do Jews pronouse G-D?

Thanks,
Peace Lady

When pronounced, there’s no need for the abbreviation. It’s said as though the o were present.

The Hebrew abbreviations are never pronounced. When read aloud, the word Ahdonai (pronunciation of which varies depending on which branch of Judaism you belong to, and what accent you have. I’m used to ah-duh-noy or ah-doh-noy) is substituted. Some Jews avoid saying any of G-d’s names except when praying. They instead use Hashem, which is Hebrew for “the name”.

Back To John-
What are your favorite performances?

Three’s Company- I remember an episode in which Jack convinces Mr Furley he has a twin brother, Tex. For the rest of the episode John keeps switching between Jack, and the womanizing cowboy Tex.

Hooperman- Hooperman awakens in a basement to discover he’s been imprisoned by a pathetic lunatic in red longjohns who believes that he is the devil. Hooperman goes from initial amusement “Nice stalactites. I like paper mache but I could never get the paste mixture right.”, to a variety of psyhological aproaches to getting the man to unchain him.

And the Buffy episode. John’s character starts out as this great guy. All of the scooby gang think he’d be a really cool dad. Then Buffy and the viewers see the mask slip. John convingly portrays the kind of anger and evil that makes a person beat their family.

But God (or G-d) isn’t his name, its a title. Isn’t his name in Jewish Yahweh or Jehova? And even so, its a translated English bastardization of the original Hebrew tongue. I don’t see how you can hold these words up to be sacred.

Do Jews have a problem using the generic term “god” or “gods”?
