Alright to link to my blog?

In my sig?

A related question but I often see “E-mail the mods to ask” in relation to queries like this but I’m not really sure whether that means I should pop up any random moderator’s profile page and search for their email address, or if it’s better to figure out which one would actually be the deciderer for questions of that sort. It would be nice if there was a list of mods and their duties or a “general questions” address.

On this question, ask anyone; we’d kick the question around on the mod loop and get back to you.

For truly general questions, ask an administrator (TubaDiva, Gfactor, Dex).

For forum-specific questions (“May I post such-and-such an OP in Forum X?”), contact (via email or PM) one or all of the mods for that forum, who are listed in the bottom right-hand corner of the main page of the forum.

Interesting blog. So everyone stays on the same page, despite the passage of time, here’s the new link:

That is the same argument used by people who argue about AC current. “We’re just trading the same electron back and forth”. The difference, of course, is the fact that an electron is an electron, and the only thing that actually matters is the energy being used to push that electron, whereas a buck is only worth what people think it’s worth. I can accept or refuse to accept that your buck is worth my chicken.

But your electron will light up my lightbulb, just fine, regardless of what I’m willing to pay for that electron. Your buck won’t necessarily pay for the food the next chicken I want to sell you needs, in order to grow it to saleable size.

I could be wrong, here, but it seems to me that you are misunderstanding the difference between “wealth” and “money”.

Missed the edit window…

OOPS! My last post shouldn’t have been posted in this forum. If the OP wishes to discuss this, start a thread in an appropriate one, PM me to tell me it’s there, and I’ll get back to you. [need smilie for “sheepish grin”. I tried to delete my previous post, but couldn’t]

There’s a “comment” place on the blog itself, if you wish to discuss the particular post.

I discuss the difference between wealth and money in one blog, but I’d have to search to find it. The indicated post is dealing solely with money, not wealth.

I wasn’t really asking a question so much as pointing out that I see the moderators recommending to “email a mod” in their answers fairly often, but in the ATMB stickies there is nothing written for how to email a mod.

Right now if I wanted to email a mod and I was a newby to the forum, my only hope would be to randomly search through posts looking for someone with “moderator” under their name. Certainly, I can do that, but it’s a bit labor intensive. As a long-time member, I’m aware of the listing at the bottom of the forums, but then that still comes to the question of who to contact for what.

I can understand not wanting to list email addresses in a forum post, but I don’t see any reason not to have a list of administrators and moderators somewhere in the ATMB stickies, with each name being a link to their profile page. Particularly if one of the key solutions to many problems is to contact a moderator directly, to not have information on how to do just that publicly available in a sticky is quite odd.

Not so. There’s a link on the front page to “Forum Leaders” and that has links to email addys, etc.

So what’s the answer? Can we link our website in our sig?

It’s a case-by-case thing. You need to ask the moderators and then, I presume, they check the content to see whether they want to allow it.

In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have included the link in my first post.

True, but “Forum Leaders” is neither easy to find (it’s all the way at the bottom of the page) and not very intuitively named – it sounds like a list of people with the highest number of posts or something similar. It’s quite easy to change this link text language in vB to something more obvious, like “View SDMB Mods/Admins.” (And it’s not a dreaded file modification, so there’s no worries there about upgrading!)

But I have to agree that it’d be extremely helpful both to newcomers and everyone else here to create a sticky in ATMB that’s titled “How to contact the mods/admin” containing at least a link to the Forum Leaders showgroups.php page. Easy to find and much more user-friendly – and really, people would expect to find this info in a forum called “About This Message Board.”

Making the info easier to find is a good idea; we’ll get on that. (And by “we” I mean “someone other than myself if it happens this afternoon, but if it doesn’t I could do it this evening.”)

Re: sig links – they are, indeed, being discussed on the mod loop, and we should have a specific answer for Sage Rat and a better statement of overall policy soon.

Thank you, ma’am! I have a new video project I wanted to link discreetly - but didn’t want to violate policy.

I just got a new machine. I’m installing stuff. I’ll get back to you on this, sooner or later. Give me a PM in a week or two if you still care, and I forget.

Up till now we’ve had a rule against links in sigs due to concerns about spam, but on discussion we’ve concluded that (a) regular contributors aren’t likely to post objectionable links, and (b) we want to give people a reason to subscribe to the SDMB. So we’re establishing an experimental new rule, which pending comments is as follows:

Members, and only members, may post in their signatures links to other sites, including commercial sites, without prior permission from us, subject to the following guidelines: (1) the link and accompanying text may take up no more than one line, and no special fonts or other attention-getting devices may be used; (2) one link per sig, although you are free to change links periodically; (3) no links to sites promoting porn, criminal enterprises, or other ventures that in our opinion are at odds with the Straight Dope’s ignorance-fighting mission; (4) you have some personal interest in or association with the linked site, and are not simply acting as an agent for third parties. We may post additional guidelines from time to time. Please understand that this is an experiment and may be discontinued if administration proves difficult, we get too many tacky links, or the character of the board is otherwise adversely affected. The existing rule about using sigs once per thread to avoid clutter remains in effect.

While we’re at it we’re going to make sig files a member benefit and disable them for non-members. That doesn’t mean non-members can’t have signatures, but they must enter them manually. Non-members can’t post links in sigs, though.

Comments?

I don’t know the difference between a sig file and a manually entered sig, but the plan seems reasonable at face value. As a guest, if I were to include a link to my sig, it would be to the SDMB thread from whence it came, but I can understand the rationale of using sig-link ability as a perk for members.

I assume the current “use sigs 1 time per thread” policy remains in effect?

Also–I tried to attach my sig to this post twice. Checked the box as normal, but no sig is displayed…

Only Members can have signature files.

The sig file is associated with your profile (like location and post count), and will appear automatically if you check the “show your signature” box. A manually entered sig has to be entered manually each time.

Yes.

What do you think your signature is?

And yes, Ed should have included this but you may only use your sig file once per page. as always.

And now, I can’t seem to locate my sig at all. Think I went through all of the things in the User CP, but I didn’t find wherever my sig used to be…

The automatic signature function has been turned off for Guests.
