alteration of quotes from a third party (i.e. not another poster)

the old issue with the “Drumpf” extension causing people to inadvertently alter quoted text got me wondering- does the rule that quoted text is sacrosanct extend to third parties? e.g. I have the “Detrumpify” extension installed, but as it uses a whitelist it doesn’t do anything on SDMB. but if I quote a snippet from NY Times which Detrumpify changes “Trump” to “Human/Komodo Dragon Hybrid,” does that run afoul of the rule?

I quoted a small bit from a NYT column in “Elections” but changed “Undead Tangerine” and “Thin-skinned Idiot” back to “Trump” just to be safe.

The rule is not about altering quotes, it’s about altering quotes by another poster. The rule only applies when you use the “quote” function to quote another poster on the board, with the post attributed to that poster.

This said, if you are quoting the New York Times, you shouldn’t modify the quote without indicating such. This isn’t a matter of board rules, but just good practice. In particular, you shouldn’t modify quotes from sources in order to mislead other posters. In some circumstances, that could constitute trolling.

I just wanted to be clear before risking a warning.
