Altering IKEA Furniture

I think this is the correct forum for this question.

In a little while, my new husband and I will combine our separate homes into one. This is made more fun by the fact that we have almost completely divergent tastes in furniture. His is generally modern, with a few large pieces purchased from IKEA. Nothing against that, I like the stuff. Mine tends to be more of the overstuffed couches and darker woods and is a bit more consistent with the house.

Here is my question: has anyone ever tried to alter the color of IKEA furniture? He has a dining room set that is the lighter (birch?) color and I was thinking about somehow coloring or staining it to a slightly darker shade so it doesn’t stand out as much against the rest of the home. He doesn’t mind. My concern is that it may not be wood, so staining could be a problem or that it would turn out crappy looking. I can make or get chair covers, so that is fairly easy to solve.

Thoughts? Suggestions? War stories? Thanks in advance!

If the furniture is solid wood, you ought to be able to strip and re-stain it. If it is simply veneer over particle board like a lot of IKEA furniture, then you are likely SOL.
