A traditional slotted toaster: a decidedly nonversatile appliance; it’s fantastic at what it’s specifically designed for, but otherwise seemingly useless. In short, it toasts foodstuffs, specifically foodstuffs that are, for the most part, intentionally designed in a manner conducive to being toasted in a slotted toaster, e.g. sliced bread, cut bagels, frozen waffles, Pop Tarts, etc.
My question is, as it pertains to food, what else could I use a toaster for besides toasting the above mentioned items?
What have YOU used a toaster for besides toasting the above mentioned items?
Back when I had a toaster, I opted for a wide-slot “bagel” toaster. Still did two slices of bread just fine, but also did thicker stuff. It also had an insert with which I could make toasted sandwiches. Made perfect cheese and melt sandwiches. I think it was a Rowenta. Lasted 20 years.
I saw foil bags marketed once which allowed you to make toasties without getting melted gunk all over the inner workings. Apparently you could also cook baked beans in them, but I never felt the need to try.
Years ago on Unscrewed with Martin Sargent (I miss TechTV, screw you G4!) they reviewed some pouches that let you cook things in your toaster. They weren’t foil but high-temp silicone. Seemed to work pretty well…
Hmm. If you’re not strictly going for personal experience, I can think of a few uses.
Meat tenderizer
Pop-tart incinerator (pretty fiiire)
Walk in freezer doorstop
Make-shift warming plate
Timing a three minute egg
Bene Gesserit pain box for testing potential sous chefs/Kwisatz Haderach?
Ok, bottom of the barrel reached faster than anticipated.
You can cook anything in a toaster that you can fit into a toaster bag. They are one of the few allowed cooking devices at my college dorm, and they sold those things in the bookstore.
I’ve noticed at my local Sobey’s that they have these pork and chicken cutlets shaped like pop tarts you can cook in your toaster. I don’t exactly trust my toaster to cook meat though, so I haven’t tried it.
