Sad day.
Here is the link.
It’s an entertaining show and I like it, but 250 episodes feels like enough. It’s one of those shows that stands up to multiple viewings because it’s so darned interesting and enjoyable. I’d imagine it’s gotten difficult for them to put new ones together since they’ve already covered so many topics.
Besides, Alton Brown still has like 80 other shows to do.
Dammit.
Noooooooooooooooo!
I tend to agree. I’m betting he has something new up his sleeve, though I’d expect him to take a little time off at first.
I still haven’t seen them all. I’m tempted to buy the DVDs, even though they’re expensive, because they’d be like a quirky food encyclopedia.
I’d watch anything he came up with, really, so I’m not too upset he’s moving on to other things. I would be disappointed if all he did was host other reality shows and we didn’t get all the fun of Alton, but I’d probably at least give that a try.
I’m quite sure Bob Tuchman has already signed Alton to at least two new projects for Food Network. We’ll still see him often. Good Eats had a good run, but it’s time to move on to bigger and better things.
No! NO!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (runs from room, screaming)
…
Well, he’ll still be around, doing other stuff, he has been, is presently, and will be, a very busy guy. I have to admit, Good Eats was the one program I really enjoyed, consistently, over the years.
Dang.
I learned SOOO much from Good Eats.
I don’t think he should be allowed to quit until he fulfills all the promises for “another show” about a topic. Also, why the heck not go ahead and make a 250th?
I’ve seen them all, and it’s the only show on Food Network I can really stand. (Iron Chef is okay in a pinch, but lasts too long. I just need conception, highlights of what went wrong, and the taste test.) And I was comforting myself with the idea that I would get to see more.
I hope the specials are good.
He’s got books out that detail every episode. I wondered why he referred to the 2nd book as the second in a trilogy, unless he had plans to cap the series at some point, and I guess that was right.
(third one’s not out yet, obviously)
Bigger, no way better.
I had a feeling it was coming. I think Good Eats is the last prime-time instructional show on Food Network. They went from airing it 2 to 3 times a day to once a week.
His show was the only cooking show I ever watched.
Sad news, though the show had a great run.
Alton’s original background (TV, not cooking) made it a very different kind of cooking show. He focused on teaching you why things work the way they do in a kitchen, not just “here’s how I make risotto”, and he did it in an incredibly entertaining fashion. I got to meet him once at a book signing; he’s very funny and engaging off-screen, too.
Noooo!!
That is my all time favorite show! (ok one of them)
It was the kind of show where you weren’t just learning how to make one dish, but the nature of the ingredient and how to work with it in different ways. It could have gone on forever, as far as I’m concerned. And it was FUNNY! I noticed that most the episodes lately had been old. sigh.
Along with those, I suggest the fans out there check out his other books:
I’m Just Here For The Food
I’m Just Here For More Food
Alton Brown’s Gear For Your Kitchen
Feasting On Asphalt: The River Run
They’re all great.
Does the DVD include a disc with printable recipes? Because I would find a way to get that.
Aren’t most recipes available on food network’s website?
I never watch cooking shows because as a vegetarian I’ve found they generally don’t focus on stuff I can eat. I take it this was a popular one?
Yes it was. Mainly because it was like Bill Nye meets a cooking show. It was sciencey, funny, and used very clear and simple instructions. And each episode was generally focused on a specific ingredient or technique. SO instead of the usual “Today we’re going to make lemon chicken risotto with a side of blah blah blah” it was “This episode is about tomatos” or “This episode is about steak.” Hell, he even had two episodes about salt and water.
Also, in honor of today, I’m wearing this shirt that I got for Christmas.
