According to the national weather service, this area still has 27 inches of unmelted snow on the ground. I’m really hoping that we’ll get rid of a lot of this snow in the next seven days.

This entire month has been below average in temperature, from 4 to 20 degrees colder than normal (it’s barely been above freezing all month, that is), so this week of finally having mostly seasonable weather has me optimistic. Am I going to be disappointed, or do you think there will be some significant melting? How about melting of the 2 inches of ice under the snow that coats our little 3-home road?
I haven’t seen bare ground since the second week of November, so I really hope I’m not wrong to expect some significant change.
Our high today was 53, and you’d think that would have been enough to melt the last remaining snow from the last storm. But no, it has at least as much to do with ground temperature as air temperature. And also how much sunshine the area in question gets.
On the other hand, though, the rain is actually getting rid of some of the snow. There’s a big bare patch of ground (big enough to park a car on) that didn’t exist this weekend. I stared at it dumbfounded for a while.
It sounds bad now but just wait until August when the last flake melts and you can bask in the glory being fairly confident it won’t return for another 6 - 8 weeks or so.
A certain person used the aluminum boat last summer, and never turn it back upside down. It is a solid block of ice to the top. How long will that take to melt? Being it’s so heavy it can’t be moved either.
I’d expect some headway for you when you manage highs in the 50’s.
Once it gets definitely above freezing every night, rig a pump & hose to pour water from the pond/lake/whatever onto the ice-filled boat. It’ll erase the ice in a couple days max.
