Am I sick or what?

Really. I’ve had a friggin sore throat for 2 weeks now. At first, because I had no other symptoms, I chalked it up to allergies and a night of heavy drinkin without much water on the hottest day in NY history without AC. However, days passed and each morning since, I’ve woken up with a sore throat. I’ve also been coughing up yellow brown phlegm. Other than that, no symptoms. Until today. Now I appear to have the worst sinus headache I remember having in my life to date.

What the heck is going on? cold? sinus infection?

I am just getting over the same thing – and it took 8 days of antibiotics before I started feeling any better. Mine was “upper respiratory infection”.

Go see the doctor.

Anytime you get colored phlegm you should get it checked out.

Sure sounds like it. Being a parent of a young child, I see a whole lot of that. As a parent of a young child, I recommend you calling your doctor. More specifically, ask to speak to a nurse at your doctor’s office.

might be the plague…

I had this a few weeks ago… I called it “having a cold by stages” AKA A Pain in the Ass.

Woke up Friday with scrathy throat. Attributed it to teaching riding lessons in dusty arena on thursday.
Woke up Saturday with BAD sore throat. Considered calling doctor for strep culture. Decided to wait it out one day.
Woke up Sunday: sore throat miraculously healed! Replaced by most hideous sinus congestion ever. Stagger about in haze.
Woke up Monday: Sinus congestion miraculously healed! Replaced by slight fever. Force self to go to work (had to, everyone was on vacation and I was the skeleton crew).
Woke up Tuesday: Fever gone! Replaced by hacking cough. Drag self to work (see above). People in nearby cubes offer me cough drops throughout day, because I’m coughing so hard I’m gagging.
Woke up Wednesday: see tuesday. Stomach muscles sort from coughing. Buy cough suppressent, being careful not to accidentally purchase expectorant. (This is a big deal for me – I don’t usually buy products that just mask symptoms.)
Thursday, friday, saturday, sunday: hack hack hack hack hack, but in decreasing severity.

So, in sum, it was annoying, non-fatal and did not require intervention of a doctor. However if you live in a moist climate, I could see it quickly turning into bronchitis. Monitor self closely, Moe.

Thanks for the input! rmariamp I’m still on your sunday. (though it took me 2 weeks to get here). I don’t have medical insurance so I’m just doing everything I can to not see your Monday.

If you don’t have insurance, go to a walk-in clinic, or the student health center if you attend college. They will usually fix you up for around $30 + antibiotics (at least in CA). Ask for samples of the antibiotics, they should give you some.
