Am I the only one reading "nm" as "near miss"?

Instead of “never mind”?

I don’t know why exactly, but every single time I see the “nm” edit in a post, my brain thinks “Near Miss!” Yes, with an exclamation point.

I’m not sure when it started, but I can’t stop thinking it now. And frankly, it makes it a little more fun. Just wondering what the person had written that made the little Straight Dope Fairy come by and erase it while screaming “Near Miss!”

Anyway, that’s how I spend my days…

Also handy when playing “Battleship”. “Nautical Mile” or “Near Miss”!

(And whoever had the idea of using “m” to abbreviate “mile” ought to be torpedoed and sunk…)

Miles were abbreviated as “m” before meters were invented.

No, just you…up until now. Thanks a lot! :frowning:

Back when the slang started we were doing n/m instead of nm which I still use if I abbreviate it. It looks so much cleaner although it is 1 key harder to do… Life truly sucks

Of course, nm also means nanometre…

I think I was reading sci.space.something, and was getting awfully confused by orbits in nautical miles, and I was reading it as nanometers. Boy those are LOW Earth orbits

The distance from the Earth to Litella is, roughly speaking, 296,567 neverminds.
