Whenever I go to the barber’s and he is doing around my ears with the little clippers I get a weird tingling sensation in the butt-cheek on the same side, so if he is doing around my right ear my right butt-cheek will start to tingle. I mentioned it in the pub a few nights ago much to the amusement of my friends, I had always assumed it happened to everyone but none of them had ever experienced it.
So what about it Dopers, have any of you experienced what (in case i’m the first to publicly discuss it) I will christen the “Barbershop Tingle”?
I’ve never had that, but sometimes if you pinch the skin on the inside of my knee I’ll feel it just above my kidneys. This tingle you describe, it sits right on top of the skin, doesn’t it? My guess is that there’s a large network of nerves in your body, especially on the surface of your skin and sometimes their signals get a little sidetracked on their way to your brain.
I’m going to take a guess that it’s vagal nerve stimulation because my daughter has seizures that originate in the area behind her ear and she gets what she calls the “butt tingles” when she is in the beginning stages.
Yeah I guess it is feasible that the fast vibration of the clippers on the skin could cause signals to get a little crossed. I’m really looking for validation that i’m not a freak, I guess evidence of other strange links would serve just as well
You’re a freak, but your not alone. I remember getting the tingle down the whole side of my body when the barber would use the clippers on my neck. I had never really thought about it until now, but I haven’t felt it since I moved away from my childhood home area. I guess it was just the way that one barber did it.
Funny how nerves can get all crossed. I posted once (and never got an answer) about a weird nerve thing I discovered when getting a pedicure. When the woman rubbed the exfoliating cream over my shins, I’d get a very sudden, strong pain in my chest. The only way I can think to describe it is like a super-intense tickle, right in my sternum. I didn’t know whether I was going to laugh or scream, and when I was about to ask her to stop, she was done anyway. Very odd.
I used to get that all the time as a kid. Not so much anymore; not as strong a sensation now anyway.
For me though, the barber didn’t even have to touch me but just bring the clippers near the back of my neck at a very certain spot (below my ear), and my tingling was just above my buttock, in the small of my back.
