And you’ll note, that even the other way around it’s STILL stupid. My point exactly.
I like the band, but with some reservation - some songs (“Aluminum”) are just horrible, and I can definitely see where some would absolutely hate them, but they’re definitely a band I suggest to people to ‘try out’ because I dig their sound in general (especially say “You’re pretty good looking”).
I agree with a lot of people commenting on ‘overrated’ bands, especially the Strokes - add Dispatch and Guster to that list, and I think it creeps toward comprehensive.
I like them. you can bash on the white stripes all you want, but I like them. Yeah they don’t have a bass. Yeah, the drumming leaves a lot to be desired. Yeah, some of the songs have lame premises. yeah, they’re new album is not as good as they’re first two. But they’re original!!!
In a world where every band sounds like every other band the white stripes have come out with something different. you gotta at least cut them some slack for that. And if a few dumbass journalists got excited simply because they’re new and different, while I cut those journalists some slack too…
Ya know, I had never heard anything by them until a few weeks ago, when a friend took me to see them play. We stayed for the whole show, but I walked out of the club with not a single song still in my mind.
Loud and fast, but no energy at all.
Glad I don’t have to interview you.
I think they’re okay…but I LOVE their Lego video!
They are absolutly, positively, NOT brother and sister.
A good friend of mine, one with no reason to lie or deceive me, used to go to school with Meg White, the drummer for the White Stripes, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Grew up together, graduated together, were in freakin’ Brownies together. She states, without hesitation, that they are absolutely not brother and sister.
This friend, as well as another very close friend of mine, attended a wedding a few years ago where they were seated at a table with the pre-fame White Stripes who were, at the time, a married couple who had just started a band together.
Unless Meg White had somehow tricked the people in her hometown for 18 years while growing up, I’m going to believe my friends.
New and different? Nah. They’re different when you compare them against most of the “nu-metal” bands getting airplay, but it sounds all a bit late 1970s / early 1980s to me.
Highly overrated. The drumming makes Phil Rudd of AC/DC look like a freakin’ genius. And if your drummer is going to be that boring and unmusical, not having a bassist to add rhythmic interest and fill out the sound is just silly.
Half the group is from Grosse Pointe? Well, there goes any “street cred” this group may have had. So much for them being from Detroit. Grosse Pointe is to Detroit as Beverly Hills is to L.A.
Geez. Ever since I started this thread I just keep hearing stuff that makes me dislike them even more.
Thats funny, the station that plays them all the time near me is a Clear Channel station.
Anyway, I don’t mind the song, its kinda catchy, IMO. I don’t think I’ll go buy the album or go see them live, but its two minutes of my life I don’t feel like I’ve wasted.
They’re getting played a lot on WRAX in Birmingham. It’s a nice change from all the Linkin Park, Staind, and Weezer they overplay.
Count me in with blur on this one. I turn it up when they come on the radio or MTV2, but I’ve yet to say, “I wish they’d play that White Stripes song,” when I haven’t heard it for a while.
They aren’t great, they aren’t mindblowing musicians, and, no they aren’t even that original (they kind of remind me (energy and stule, not sound) of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
But they are fun. I dig their album a lot.
