Am I The Only One With Deformed Ears (iPod Earbuds Don't Stay In)?

My GF’s iPod is neat. But the earbuds don’t seem to have anything to do with my ear canal’s shape. I have to kind of jam them in, and there’s really no place for them to settle-down into – then if I move my head, they’ll fall out. Forget about jogging, no way they’d stay in for two seconds.

Whatever sort of wedging/notching effect these things have for other people (my GF jogs vigorously with them in with no problem), I am lacking that wedge or notch in my ears, and it’s not even close to workable. I’ve had this problem with every other earbud headphones I’ve ever tried – finally gave up and got a pair that loop over the ear.

Anyone else have this problem?

I hate earbuds for this same reason. I just bought some headphones with an actual band that goes over my head, so I don’t have to keep farting around with them while exercising. Hate earbuds.

Well, obviously, she had bought a girl’s version :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep, I had the same earbud problems. I ride a bike a lot and found I spent the majority of my time steering with one hand and sticking earbuds back in with the other. I got some of the ‘ear huggers’ that actually hook around your ear and hold the earbud stationary in your ear. They’ve been the perfect solution for me.

My ears are also pretty much not compatible with earbuds.

Yep. I can’t get the fuckers to stay in there no matter what I try.

I seem to be half and half. Some days my earbuds stay in as if they were glued in place and other days they will no stay in for more than 5 seconds. Do ears change shape when the temperature changes?

I’ve long suspected that I’m doing it wrong because earbuds hurt like hell. While I seem to have deformed ears, the buds don’t fall out, so I’m not sure this is valid for your survey.

I don’t think you’re missing out. A harvard medical school study has suggested that they’re poorly designed and frequent use in noisy public settings can cause hearing loss. I tried out a pair maybe 8 years ago, and no I could never get the damn things to stay in, either.

I don’t have an ipod, but we do have some earbud type headphones on our computer. The left one stays in fine, the right one won’t stay in for anything. And yes, I’ve switched them around and there’s no difference - it’s my ear, not the bud.

Don’t wear earbuds! You shouldn’t stick anything in your ear smaller than your elbow, as the old saying goes. Seriously, they are mass-produced and not customized so of course they won’t fit. Most people’s ears are different sizes, too. I suggest you try the earthings **MsFancyPlants **mentions, that actually hook around your ear.

I have the same issue with the Apple ear buds, but I found that the Sony ear buds work fine. They have a little rubber cushion that helps keep them in the ear. Whether they are good or bad for you is another topic.

This is my problem as well. They stay in but they just don’t ever feel right or they hurt.
(JFTR, I don’t actually own an iPod, but I’ve used my daughter’s iPod and the ear buds hurt.)
I have a portable CD player, and a little handheld radio/sound machine thing from Sharper Image and the ear buds for both of those are just uncomfortable. I twist them around and around and I can never get them to feel like they fit right.

I’m quite happy with my pair of these , though they were a bit pricey for my tastes.

They come with various size of “soft silicon earbud” attachments. I have to use the largest, but they stay snuggly in place.

I lost the little plastic thingy a long time ago, so they’re constantly getting tied in knots when going in and out of my messenger bag, to the extent of one of my soft earbuds being slightly ripped, but so far it has stayed entact.

The earbuds that came with my iPod were horrid and I threw them away after a day.

Some people have an outer ear canal in the shape of a U. These people have great success with the earbud headphones. The speaker part of the earbud slides behind the U and stays nicely in place.

My ear canal is more like an O shape and the earbuds don’t stay in at all.

iPod earbuds don’t stay in my ears very well, either. And the earbud foams that came with them were peices of shit I had to replace in a month. They’re complete garbage. I’ve never met a single iPod owner who didn’t either replace them, or was too cheap to do so but hated them forever.

That’s my problem. They either won’t stay in or they hurt. I’ve thrown them away. (The ear buds, not the ears.)

If you mean this one, I like them too, after I realized it’s meant to be inserted deep in the ear so the rubber ear-piece seals the ear canal completely. Very comfortable and sounds great. I wouldn’t use them for jogging though - they block exterior sound too well, which is dangerous on the road.

The don’t stay in my ears and they hurt.

Me, too, although I’ve taken to using a non-Apple brand (Griffon, maybe) that has the soft extenders that people are talking about. They stay in, but they sort of “seal,” which I find uncomfortable for long periods.

The big problem, though, is that I can’t seem to find plain old headphones in my local stores any more – I’ve got a choice between 2,619 different styles of earbuds, or headphone/microphone combinations (which are hard to transport and look stupid connected to an iPod-like device). Plain old “stereo only” headphones appear to be going the way of vinyl records.

Sure, I could mail order them, but I feel stupid mail ordering something that costs $2.99.
