Amazing Race - 12/4/2002

2 hour episode tonight, but it starts at the normal time so adjust those VCRs accordingly.

Standings run-down

  1. Derek/Drew
  2. Flo/Zach
  3. Teri/Ian
  4. Ken/Gerard
  5. John Vito/Jill

With 2 hours to fill, how will things go? I would assume, based on past history, that the first hour of the 2 will be a non-elimination leg, marking two in a row for this season. While odd, it might be fun to watch.

I thought it was interesting last week. It seemed like the racers were not aware it was non-elimination, making for a much tenser atmosphere. The show also did a good job by keeping each portion of the leg tight and having each task be a 5 team bunching point.

If a fast forward is made available, I believe JV/Jill use it. I also believe that unless another team makes a big mistake or has horrendous luck, Teri and Ian will go home. Of course I also believe that every week since that team is even less palateable than Wil/Tara last year.

Since I know I am not the only fan of this show here, I will now post a self-thread bump.

mmmm… 2 hours of Amazing Race. I too hate Ian with brilliant blinding passionate fury, but he does make me want, nay, need to watch the show. He gives me cathartic release each week, so while I would celebrate his loser ass going home, I would miss him the way I miss a good zit.

But he must not win. Go, Ken and Gerard! Go, John Vito and Jill!

I was so stressed watching last week’s episode. Right after Ken and Gerard made it to the mat I got a call from a friend who was visiting family in Boston who had to call to celebrate K&G not getting eliminated (they are our favorites). So I happily got to tell her it wasn’t an elimination round (she missed that and is new to the show). We’re both very excited for tonight’s episode.

Oh–so it turns out that her sister’s boss knows Zack and says that Flo is a whiny bitch in real life too.

I’ve been silent far too long…

I have to cheer on my favorites: Go John Vito and Jill !!!

Woo-hoo! Two hours of AR goodness!

I find the timing of the non-elimination rounds rather strange this season; that the first one came so late, and now (possibly) this one right after.

I don’t know who I want to be eliminated more: Ian or Flo. Maybe they could steal a page from Survivor and make them switch teams. An Ian/Flo combination would be fascinating to watch.

YES. Team-switching would be so great. It, of course, is not what this show is about (I like to think of it as not quite as ‘pushy’ as Survivor), but I hate them both. Already, and last week was my first episode. Especially Flo. Uck, Flo.

Anyway, looking forward to it. Especially since I thought I was going to have to watch only the second hour after watching my beloved West Wing, but it’s a rerun, so it’s wine and cheese and Amazing Race for me.

I’m exhausted after the 2-hour AMAZING RACE! And I’m sorry to see John Vito and Jill leave the race. They seemed like really nice people who looked to be sure bets for the final 3. I can’t figure out exactly what cost them so much time; could they just not follow maps or what? Anybody got any ideas about this?

I did so want to see Flo and Zach get the boot, especially after her tantrum at the end of the first hour! The only hope is that the previews for next week’s show seem to have Zach finally melting down. Good!

And why the heck didn’t Teri’s underwear dissolve when she and Ian swam with the manatees? And if it wasn’t going to dissolve, why make an issue of it? And why show us Teri in her unpleasant state of semi-undress? This is not appropriate tittilation!

Question: In hour #1, where were the teams’ backpacks?

I think that I am permanently scarred from seeing Teri’s ass hang out of her paper underpants.

And I have a special message for Flo: SHUT THE FUCK UP!!

Good God, has nobody killed her yet?

I’m not looking at the comments as it’s still on in my area, but I’m at the commercial break after Flo’s meltdown with the map. I didn’t think it possible, but I officially hate her more than Ian.

What an utterly useless bitch.

And Zach is a wuss. What self-respecting person would put up with that abuse?

More later

Fenris

I think Zach is trying to be a gentleman in front of the camera and by not confronting her he comes off looking like a lapdog of Flo’s.

Flo has got to be the most annoying whore there is. I use the word whore because she is totally using Zach for the money/race and will dump him as soon as the race is over and hook up with Drew.

Drew on the other hand is more sneaky and well-aware of what is going on. Maybe his brother told him the priorities up front (i.e. the race) and they’ll use her and leave her in the dust, where as, Flo thinks she’s gonna hook up with Drew and doesnt have a care in the world about how she’s gonna go on with the race.

i hope they get eliminated in the next leg.

I dont know why everyone is hung up about Ian… sure he is abrasive and quite annoying to us but that’s their generation.

I love him, even with his macho attitude. I love Teri even more that she puts up with, nay, loves him. They work great together and each has a role in the team, they know that Ian is the muscle and Teri is the brains. Ian is very handy, as we saw in the Diesel gas engine repair on the go, and today in the quick bike fix.

and we all gotta love Ken and Gerard, calling the bluff of that Phil guy trying to fake them out about their end-leg position. They are really having a blast as they play.

I hope they keep the Amazing Race on the air, it’s gotta be one of the best Reality shows on air presently.

I’m cheering for Teri & Ian and Ken & Gerard.

Ken and Gerard for me from here on in. I was a John Vito and Jill fan, but my dreams were swatted by a street map. But their little goodbye speech made me all warm and fuzzy. Ah, we hardly knew ye, John Vito and Jill.

YES!! YES!! YES!! My favorite team, Teri & Ian, are still in it. They’re like the Guidos, the Team You Love To Hate. I just wish the first stop had been elimination, instead of the second. (Those consecutive non-elim. legs really surprised me, I was convinced that they wouldn’t do that, despite rumors to the contrary.)

I so, so, so much want to see Zach & Flo go. Purely because of Flo. I can’t believe they were in SPITTING DISTANCE of passing Ian & Teri, and Flo totally gave up. If I were Zach, I would have stormed out of the paddleboat, caught the next train to Paris, and flown home immediately, without even bothering to go to the checkpoint. (And then gone on a killing spree, after learning it was non-elimination. But that’s just me.) I cannot stand that bitch. What’s worse, is that the budding relationship between her and Drew (Derek?) will give both teams added synergy, like Tarawill and the other white/hetero team that won last season. (Except this time, Flo is definitely the fifth wheel, as opposed to Wil.)

And, I get the feeling that Teri & Ian’s relationship isn’t nearly as hostile as the editing suggests. They even showed him apologizing to her tonight. And despite getting NO help from the other teams, they’re still #4. Could they win it all??? Man, that would get ugly…

(On the other hand, I’m rather put out that only ONE of the five teams instantly recognized “Petronas Towers” when they read the clue. If it were me, I’d have peed all over myself, being the infrastructure geek that I am.)

From now on, she will only be known to me as FlHobag. Tht woman is a bitter, cowardly, weak shrew. My faves were eliminated last night, but I can’t be too disappointed simply because the race showed they were decent people and that is worth much more in the long run than the combination of money/scorn that Flo and Ian may eventually end up with.

Great ep last night.

Too bad to see John Vito and Jill go. They were the class team this time out (like Danny & Oswald in AR2 and David & Margaretta in the first AR), the ones who were always kind and supportive of each other and who managed to stay above the bickering and pettiness of the other teams. I’ve got to go with Ken & Gerard now, at the very least they seem to be having the best time.

And, yes, Flo had now achieved a greater annoyance level for me than Ian. Zach must have the patience of a saint. Even when it is incredibly obvious that Flo is more interested in Drew than him (her going to Derek & Drew’s car on the train, her sitting with Drew on the plane, Flo even saying she would rather be sleeping with Drew than Zach at the hotel (though that was directed at us and he probably didn’t hear it)) he is still trying to keep them together as a team. (For example, when Flo had her meltdown at the end of the first half he was still encouraging her onward) And god only knows what was going on with that map incident.

I also found her several expressions of surprise/disgust that they were behind an older team annoying. Maybe because I’m closer to Teri & Ian’s age than I am to Flo’s, but still. Hey, Flo! We don’t drop dead when we pass 30 you know…

Other things. Could we get any more obvious with the product placements in this episode? It’s not enough that we have to watch a dozen Kodak & T-Mobile ads during the episode, now they actually become Race checkpoints!

Speaking of checkpoints, they really have scheduled these to keep the teams much closer together this time out. Everyone is bunched up much more often than they have been in the previous two Races.

Also, could Ken & Gerard be having any more fun? I thought their interplay with Phil at the first Pit Stop was amusing and the little flip one of them made at the fountain was funny too. Oh, I would have attempted to lose Flo & Zach after the map incident, but that’s just me…

I didn’t see any scenes for the next episode, the news cut in early so they could try to panic everyone by crying wolf over a possible ice storm. Where are they going next week?

Next week, it looks like Zach has finally had enough of Flo. One can only hope.

How does Flo distinguish between Derek and Drew anyway? We know that one of them is married, so she must have just picked the other by default. And how does that twin not see what a shrew she is? The other teams must have at last some clue - they tried to freak her out by telling her that the next task would involve a bungie jump.

Why, oh why couldn’t the first leg have been the elimination leg? The teams were lined up exactly like I wanted them!

I have to admit I have more respect for the twins now, they are showing that they really are stronger and smarter than anyone thought. Ken and Gerard are my favorites, though. They have so much fun and surprised me by winning the foot race against Flo and Zach. Flo annoyed me too with all her shock over Ian and Teri actually being ahead of them. At least she acknowledged she was an idiot for giving up so quickly, although the next day she was back to being a whiny bitch. I would have laughed my ass off if Ken and Gerard had ditched them when they got their map. So long, suckers!

I will miss John Vito and Jill, so classy to the end. Flo, are you taking notes?

If Ken and Gerard win, I will be thrilled. If the twins win, I’ll be satisfied (esp. if he uses Flo and then dumps her), but if either of the other 2 teams win, I will feel the misalignment of the universe. By the way, does anyone remember if Flo was part of the twin-hating alliance at the beginning? I can’t remember who all was part of that, but it would be pretty funny if she was.

What kind of ageist crap is that? I’m probably exactly Ian’s age, and I think he’s an abusive, condescending misogynist blame-shifting finger-pointing asshole, and have nothing but pity for his wife.

I had the same reaction as jsc1953. I’m in the same age range too and I don’t know anyone who treats his wife that way.

He’s a jerk. It has nothing to do with his age.

What Velma said, with a minor caveat:

If Ian/Teri win, I’ll be annoyed, but not nearly as annoyed as if Flo wins. At least Ian/Teri are hungry for the win. They’re willing to work for it.

Flow just expects to be carried.
