Same.
Oh it’s far from being something to turn anyone away from the show, but to me it’s a hint of carelessness towards the lore.
Possibly they don’t care, possibly they just care more about telling the story they want without concerns of absolute lore purism.
I’m with them on that, BTW - hell, I just unsubscribed from a Youtube channel I quite liked because the presenter went on a long rant about elves having to have long hair (and be White, of course).
I certainly believe it’s possible to go too far away from canon - I had high hopes for the Pratchett-inspired Watch series, but what a clusterfuck that was - but “those common sounds wouldn’t be put together that way for another 1000 years” is nowhere near my threshold.
What about pointy ears? (I know he never apparently mentioned it.)
and thank Eru that the Balroqs hadn’t shown up yet.
I did see a very silly person suggesting that there wouldn’t be any tanned or even dark-skinned elves because the light of the trees was magical and therefore not like sunlight.
Excuse me, I have to go find my eyeballs. I think they rolled all the way across the room.
I have to agree with this. If some detail that doesn’t matter a bit towards the story being told is carelessness, you are probably going to nitpick this show to death. I went into this series not expecting them to match up to things laid out in the movies. Expecting them to follow every little thing Tolkien ever scribbled down on a scrap of paper is a pipedream. It’s just not going to happen.
Yep, it’s some kind of irony that people use the term “canon” for fictional works, because it really is treated like an infallible religious text. It’s not. It’s just a story.
I willed myself to put aside my nitpickery and to try and enjoy the series for what it is. So far, so good. And to be honest, only a few people on this board are more knowledgeable of the Professor’s complete works than I am. So if I can do it, I would think most others can also.
I’m going to have small problems with things but overall nothing too bad.
As I’ve demonstrated above, I’m no stickler for canon, but if you come across differences between the show and Tolkien, I would be curious about your observations.
In my various posts I mentioned many of them, including really minor ones like Galadriel being too young when the Trees were destroyed.
Details on why the Stranger shouldn’t be anyone in canon.
I talked about the Blue Wizards & Glorfindel back in February in fact.
etc.
Though I do very much dislike Galadriel getting on the boat and trying to swim back, less a canon nitpick and more just stupid writing.
Yep, I read those. I’m just saying, keep doing it!
Will do. (I enjoy it as you know.)
Yes, keep it up. I don’t mind differences being pointed out. I didn’t even mind the talk about the Nori name origins. What I think is over the top is saying it just wouldn’t happen because of something Tolkien wrote in a note that was never published or one paragraph out of everything he wrote. I’m not even sure I would want a movie/tv show to follow canon to such a small level of detail since I wouldn’t know about it in the first place.
It was nagging at me, so I looked it up: Bilbo and Frodo Bagginses’ real names would have been Bilba and Maura Labingi.
Look, to each their own, I’m not saying “THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!one”, I’m saying you could have avoided calling your ancient Greek character from the time of Mycenae “Caesar” because you thought it was a cool name, I guess it is possible that the greek character coincidentally was named like that, we don’t have more than the Illiad to guide us, but it’s IMHO a mistake.
Since the show is only allowed to use LOTR and the appendices is it fair to criticize it for contradicting The Silmarillion and other sources?
Naming aside, I like Arondir, the elf played by Ismael Cruz Córdova, of all the elves on screen since the first movie his is the most “elvish” in my view, all the others mostly looked like humans with pointy ears.
Yeah, that’s what you have to do.
We can enjoy the simple beauty and complain about the many many minutes spend on Galadrial swim/raft, without nitpicking.
