Amazon Lord of the Rings series; The Rings of Power

If you zoom in really close, she has wispy mutton chops.

I had not realized that the wizards were such a recent thing. For a certain definition of recent.

I’d be very interested to see his moment of deciding whether to be mortal or not. And if they’ll reference the whole nasty Feanor business (Man, Elrond went through some tough times).

I realize that I’m incredibly excited about this. I’ve been waiting for the story of the second age since I was… maybe 12, and the publication of the Silmarillion was announced. Of course I read that, but it wasn’t very satisfying.

There’s a pretty good chance this will disappoint me, too. Or even anger me, if it’s far enough off-base. But I can’t help but be excited.

Agreed. OTOH, given the title of this series, I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Sauron, in his “fair” appearance as Annatar.

Galadriel wanted to return to middle earth, because her heart yearned for new places. She was one of the leaders of the group that traveled over the ice bridge. That’s some sense of her.

On the Wizards. The two Blue Wizards (Ithryn Luin) actually did come over in the 2nd Age and then headed east. They could be part of an arc in the show.

Tolkien kept adjusting the timeline of the Wizards and Glorfindel. Near the end, he had Alatar and his friend Pallando come over sometime in the second age. Same with Glorfindel. The best estimate is around the time of the forging of the rings. Say 2nd age 1600.

Glorfindel being left out of the Lord the Rings movies was a big hit for me. Having another elf with power somewhat on scale (but different) of Galadriel was very cool. Comments about how he couldn’t be sent with the Fellowship as he would be like a beacon to Sauron and the Ring Wraiths.

If you don’t know Glorfindel, he was a Noldorian Elf of the Light and a Captain of Gondolin. He died taking down a balrog then. He came back to Middle Earth sent by the Valar in the second age. He fought the servants of Sauron for the next 4500 years or so. Ring Wraiths were terrified of him.

He can and should be part of this new series.

Isn’t a European Elk what Americans call a moose?

I have learned something today. I bow to your superior Middle-Earth Lore score, my friend.

Yes, it would be bizarre to tell the tale of the forging of the rings without Sauron. I forget how he got to middle earth at that time. Did Melkor bring him?

If the show can use Glorfindel and sneak Tom Bombadil into it I will be far more forgiving of any liberties they do take. Treebeard would also be nice.

The Blue Wizards are available and I hope they use them for at least a bit.

Hopefully they show the oathbreakers* before the broke the oath.

The kingdoms around the Barrows near Bree would be good to see. I was sad the Barrow Wights were cut from the movie. This would be 3200 years before they existed, but early barrows were already there at least.

* The Ghost Army Aragorn summoned to him and in the movies brought to the big battle on the field of Pelennor.

Sauron was Melkor’s chief Lt. in the first age. Originally a Maia of Aulë.

Agreed! I hope to see Glorfindel in all his glory.

Yeah, and the Balrogs.

One of the blurbs linked above said that the sale of rights precludes using hobbits or wizards. Of course, they are cheating with the harfoots regarding hobbits, so maybe they will sneak in some Istari, under another name, as well.

Oooh, I would love them to include Bombadil. I bet they don’t, though. He doesn’t fit neatly into anything else. It would be easy to include Treebeard, though, and the barrows. And they’ve already said they are playing with the timeline, so I don’t see any additional problems with that.

Bombadil is a little too absurdist I think for live-action. They’d have to change him a lot of not totally shake viewers. Odds are good that whatever they do they’ll piss a lot of people off, so probably best to leave it out.

Not sure if people here were watching the Super Bowl commercials, but they debuted the first teaser trailer for the series:

Amazon has that top and center when you go to Prime Video. At least on the TV/Firestick Apps.

Hilariously, they didn’t have this up at all yesterday. My wife missed the commercial during the game and I wanted to show her, but I had a resort to YouTube to find it since it wasn’t on Prime’s service anywhere.

I hope Amazon gets their shit together before this show drops. This is prominent enough that I think Amazon would be well served to relaunch their clunky app experience over the summer so they don’t turn off new viewers.

The Hobbit had castles not far from the Shire, I thought-though that could be early installment weirdness.

It’s no longer updated, but I would be remiss if I didn’t share this amazing site.
