I’m trying to remember where I read the suggestion that the character of Galadriel should actually have been Celebrian before getting married to Elrond. Considering her history is pretty much a blank slate it probably would have worked better.
As someone who had little interest in the first season and none in the second, I won’t be watching.
I thought Season 1 was fine. It had its ups and downs. I’m a sucker for Tolkien stuff so probably had a higher tolerance than most. I just liked seeing something new being portrayed. At least it’s easier to watch than The Wheel of Time (which really stinks because that’s my favorite book series ever).
The Galadriel character in Rings of Power is not much like Galadriel of the books at all. Her daughter Celebrian however we know nothing about really and she could have been a warrior princess in this series without any harm to the lore. I never thought about it, but I like it.
Celebrian eventually does marry Elrond, early in the third age and is the mother to the future Queen of the Reunited Kingdom Arwen. Bride of Aragorn. And of course the twins Elladan & Elrohir, probably the only rangers to rival or maybe be better than Aragorn. They had over 2000 more years of experience.
Celebrian lives about 3200 years as a single Elf as she was born early second age. Making her a major character in Rings of Power would have been interesting.
She was probably somewhat of a bad-ass as in Third Age 2509 she was going over the Redhorn Pass apparently by herself to visit her parents. She was captured and poisoned by the Orcs. Elladan and Elrohir did rescue her and got her back to Elrond who cured her, but like Frodo, she never recovered from memories of torture and sailed west to Aman the next year.
Obviously, I’m not asterion, but I get what they’re saying:
The function of the character currently represented by Galadriel (i.e., Elven warrior princess who sees through Sauron’s machinations) would have been better served if it was played by the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn - Celebrian.
Celebrian would later marry Elrond, bear his children, and become the Lady of Rivendell before being captured and tortured by Orcs, rescued, and left for the Uttermost West.
And since that’s pretty much all we know about her, her being involved in all these adventures wouldn’t have caused some of the canonical issues that having Galadriel do it is causing.
Personally, I think it’s a fascinating idea and wouldn’t have changed much at all about the series, but would have settled some of the side discussions.
“We have the rights solely to The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , The Return of the King , the appendices, and The Hobbit ,” Payne says. “And that is it. We do not have the rights to The Silmarillion , Unfinished Tales , The History of Middle-earth , or any of those other books.”
It does occur to me that if the writers are going to drop canon, The Stranger could be Saruman as easily as Gandalf. That might even make for a more interesting story.
Her name is really close to her dad’s name Celeborn so that’s totally understandable.
I too like the idea of using Celebrian in that role. You can do a lot more without stepping all over lore, and I admit that I’d be really curious to see stories about Arwen’s mom.
It is a good idea especially since there’s not much written about Celebrian so you’ve a blank slate. Early in the series they set up Galadriel’s motivation as avenging the death of her brother Finrod Felagund so that kind of sticks you with Galadriel. And since we can’t draw from the Lay of Luthien, we’re not getting the bit about how honored Finrod was by the Valar for his bravery and self-sacrifice saving Beren from Sauron’s werewolves and his opposition to the Oath of Feanor, making him the first Elf to be reincarnated in Valinor. If Galadriel could see Finrod reunited with his betrothed Amarie and walking amongst the trees with their father Finarfin, she’d probably be at peace with it. Oh well, we’re telling a different story here, and she’ll find out in a few millennia anyway.
Seems simple enough to pivot from the Finrod bit and find her own motivations for Celebrian.
Now Old Tom, as the books refer to him, is finally getting his moment in the sun.
The Rings of Power, the Amazon Prime Video series based on Tolkien’s ancient history of his fantasy realm, will break that tradition of exclusion and finally feature Tom Bombadil…
OK, that doesn’t sound too bad.
…along with his jolly songs and his flamboyant wardrobe
