I don’t remember specific albums for this, and I don’t want to bother to open itunes or amazon right now, but I will say that I find the preview selection to generally be bizarrely random. It’s especially annoying with dance remixes, when the preview just contains some of the killing time interludes and none of the vocals. I think they should all be standardized to one main stanza leading into one chorus, that should work out pretty well for 99% of songs.
Isn’t that because that’s exactly what they are? I don’t believe amazon has anybody actually listen to the songs to decide what snippets to put on the page, rather they just pop the CD into a drive somewhere and some piece of software automatically rips a part of each track – possibly from a fixed time mark, or else entirely random.
I doubt it’s random. A few years ago in Japan, I was shown a piece of software from a major electronics company that would extract the “hook” from a piece of music automatically. It was remarkably adept at pulling out reasonably representative parts of songs, even ones off of my MP3 player (i.e., not just pre-selected samples for the demo). However, I’m sure there are still lots of songs that would give their algorithm fits, so even if that’s something like what Amazon are using, there will be failures from a fan-perspective in the choices.
