Amazon Shutting Down DPReview.com Site and YouTube Channel

This seems short-sighted but I assume somebody crunched the numbers and decided that the Amazon-only links weren’t generating the revenue to justify maintaining the sight and handful of reviewers. I’ll admit to buying all of my camera and video gear elsewhere but it is hard to believe this was a significant expense in the overall scheme, and certainly a blow to anyone looking for comprehensive and technically deep reviews of video hardware and software.

Damn. That makes the internet, and the world, a slightly worse place. The site was thorough, trustworthy, and looked great.

Well there’s your problem right there. Amazon doesn’t want trustworthy, they want Amazon-advantageous. Not that Amazon is much (any?) worse or better than any other mega-retailer or mega-IT company in that regard.

Sure, but the site is essentially an advertisement for Amazon.com anyway since all of the ‘buy this stuff’ links go to Amazon instead of B&H Photo, Adorama, Ritz, et cetera. I assume somebody crunched the numbers and figured Amazon doesn’t get enough thru-clicks from DPReview to justify the cost but that just seems unlikely.

They have discontinued Amazon Assistant.
