America the second-most inclusive country in the world

After Canada.

According to IPSOS

Read this in the papers this morning and thought it was good news worth sharing with you guys. Particularly in the Age 'O Trump.

The segment you did best in? Inclusiveness to naturalised citizens.

There’s hope yet…

Yay! News organisations tend to highlight the negative, so there’s so much that’s good that just doesn’t get noticed.

Why is it good new? Is it good or bad to be inclusive?

I think it’s a good thing that we are largely welcoming to people who want to experience and bolster the ideals that the nation was founded upon, regardless of their race or place of birth. Because first and foremost this is a nation of ideals, even if we argue constantly about the details of said ideals.

Unless I’m misunderstanding the concept of inclusion.

It is refreshing news. It’s easy to get bogged down with the infighting about how to manage immigration and miss the salient point: Seemingly no matter how badly we botch immigration, it’s still worth abandoning your possessions and trekking thousands of miles through unfriendly and deadly conditions for the opportunity to roll the dice on what happens to you once you get here.

Just wondering – do you think, along with becoming more inclusive, the US has become a better nation? Is there any correlation between those?

I should point out - this survey doesn’t actually imply anyone becoming more inclusive. It just lists, right now, who’s doing well compared to the rest of the world. So no way of really correlating inclusiveness results against anything.

Also, it says nothing about how much diversity or uniformity is the right amount for a society. All it asks is "Is a person with this/that/other ethnicity/sexuality/religion/political opinion a Real Person-of-your-nationality. Answering yes is really a pretty basic level of not depersonalising your fellow citizens. You don’t have to go on and say you like 'em! ‘Can a right-wing reactionary be a Real Australian?’ Well, yeah, of course . ‘Do you think right wing reactionaryism is good?’ No, I think it’s awful. But that’s got nothing to do with whether I accept that they’re people in my society.

I don’t know about correlation but yes, I think we’re better being a nation that appreciates diversity. The common thread needs to be a love of liberty and desire to make the country work in a way that improves life for everyone, regardless of small cultural or racial differences.
