American Dreams

Anyone here watching this treacle-fest? I searched and didn’t find a single post about it.

The wifey and I checked it out on Sunday - and it’s not bad. The characters are likeable enough, especially the daughter, Meg (I think).

The content is pretty funny though. It’s like they commisioned a freshman “Screenwriting 101” class at a local university to come up with every issue that a family could have dealt with in the 1960’s. Racial tension, sex discrimination, worrying about commies, it’s all here. For the most part, the show is so predictable that if you miss an episode you shouldn’t be too concerned. The “previously on American Dreams” part of the next episode will give you more than enough information to fill in the blanks.

Anyway, it’s not a bad show, it’s just not all that great either. I do think, however, that it’s nice to have at least one “family friendly” drama on the air aside from the abysmal 7th Heaven (my apologies if this show is no longer abysmal, I haven’t seen it in a while) for parents who like to watch something other than comedies with their kids.

I don’t know about you, but I think they should start to get away from American Bandstand. I don’t think they will because Dick Clark produces the show.

I’d like to see what happens when the Beatles come to America. Probably nothing because they were on Ed Sullivan, not American Bandstand.

I think it’s amusing that the little boy is our only link to major historical events (besides when they were all told of Kennedy’s death). “Yeah, so Meg wants to go on American Bandstand, but remember we’re in a Cold War!”
