American Idol 1/24

The MTV version, so whichever.

They must have done Greensboro after San Francisco, because someone said something about one of the auditioners having the best voice they’ve heard yet in the competition. That honor belongs — and barring some fundamental shift in reality, will forever belong — to Paris from Greensboro. Her voice is top tier. It’s Ella Fitzgerald meets Patsy Cline. It’s angelic. It’s the reason God made singing.

Well, that too.

I haven’t wanted to admit I’ve been watching The Real World/Road Rules Challenge, Part XXXIV.

Here was the original audition schedule:

[ul][li]8/18 - San Francisco[/li][li]8/25 - Austin[/li][li]8/31 - Boston[/li][li]9/5 - Memphis[/li][li]9/11 - Denver[/li][li]9/16 - Chicago[/ul][/li]Memphis was cancelled because of Katrina, so I’m guessing that Greensboro took its place, which means Paris came after Katherine.

When Paris sang the Dixie Chicks, I thought she was good; when she did Billie Hollliday, I was completely blown away.

I’m on the Paris bandwagon too. I’d seriously walk to the music store right now and by the CowboyTake Me Away/Take 5 CD single if it existed.

I hope nobody will mind a minor spoiler, which is that she is in the final round. I think she’ll do well and look forward to hearing more.

And I’m so irked with the censuring of Simon by GLAAD. Making comments on a guy in borderline drag or saying “that song sounded like it came from somebody in a dress” or whatever are not homophobic comments, they’re criticisms and comments and snarky barbs like he gives absolutely everybody. If he said “You’re too faggy” or if he told the kid who raped & murdered Bridge Over Troubled Waters “how can such a flamer leave me so cold”, then maybe I’d be irked, but most of these people have far worse coming than he gives them. He sat through a season of Clay-in-the-Closet without making snide comments about that particular aspect of the boy and he’s an entertainment executive (in an industry where David Geffen is god, no less), I’m pretty sure he accepts gays as facts of life, no more no less.

I agree with that. I don’t get homophobia from him at all, I get pretty much the opposite. It’s such a non-issue to him that he doesn’t see the comments on androgeny as being any different than the comments on weight. He’s only commenting on presentation and image, not sexuality.

Agreement all around on this one. Simon’s interest is entirely fiduciary.

Walter Windchill, what’s the source of that minor spoiler? Not that it surprises me, I just didn’t think that that information would be available yet.

Mama T: I just googled the name Paris Bennett and found a web boards like this one where people are talking about it (try googling Paris Bennett Kellie Pickler to make this quicker). They use something called Netnames to see if the domain names are registered, or something… it’s probably not 100% accurate, but I really can’t imagine Paris not surviving Hollywood.

She’s redeemed the first name from the damage done by the Hilton family. But in mythology, wasn’t Paris a guy?

Prince of Troy. Son of Praim. Helen’s bitch.

Stranger things have happened. It’s possible she could get an attack of nerves and so she doesn’t sound as good in Hollywood. Although, I doubt it with this one. More likely, if anything, is that other candidates will make more of an impression on the judges than they already have, and the judges will decide that Paris isn’t “it” just yet. But, again, I doubt it. Still, anything can happen.

Even though it was featured prominently in the promos, the guy with the 5 o’clock shadow and lipstick was not featured in the show (unless I somehow missed it.) Did anyone see him? The guy that Simon said looked like The Hulk’s mother.
Could it have been this bit that got GLAAD up in arms and was subsequently pulled from the show?

Maybe he’ll be in Vegas.

They showed the Hulk’s wife in one of the clips from Frisco… they did not show his actual audition, just the comments from Simon. It was in one of those hasty recaps of 20 contestants where they just have a couple notes there and a snarky comment there.

Well, apparently Kellie Pickler has sung in front of a few people before, if pageant judges and audiences or televised local talent shows count.
