Yay! American Idol starts tonight! I’m excited, aren’t you?
(crickets chirp)
Okay, well I guess that makes me the goofy one. That’s fine, I’ll admit I’m looking forward to watching this and signing on to the Dope for a good old fashioned snarkfest after every show. I hear Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney are going to be special guests this season.
I’m in. I may even keep Evil Comcast for another couple of months just for the privilege (despite relentless derision from absolutely everyone I know). Screw 'em.
I get bored when they start paring it down from 30 (or so) to 10, and I start zoning out. Then, I get bored during the next two month period while they pare it down to 2.
But, it’s always fun having someone to root for, and someone to root against. And, I like the weeks when they bring in legitimate stars to talk about singing and performing. It’s always nice to see just how drugged up Paula is, too.
I’ll probably be watching, at least parts of it. Just don’t tell anyone, ok? I have an image to uphold.
But I can tell you now I will not watch the Mariah Carey episode, if indeed there is one. While it might be amusing to watch Paula and Mariah try to out-diva each other, I can’t stand that warbly shrieking creature. And hearing the not-so-talented hopefuls do even more damage to her already-annoying songs just might push me over the edge.
I’m going to watch tonight, but I think I’m kind of the reverse of Trunk. The bad auditions bore me. One sucky out-of-key screech is as bad as another. If I can hang in there long enough, I’ll enjoy the latter parts more. I hope that this time, they don’t pretend to like rockers and just pull in the pop-idol types that they really seek. Also, their voting system needs to be scrapped and reinvented.
I don’t love the auditions but watch them for two reasons:
what if I miss something?
and
I need to start developing my loyalties.
BTW, I am not listening to Simon anymore . He’s not such a great judge. In fact, I have two words for him: Jennifer Hudson. He thought she was in over her head. He liked Ruben - Clay’s the bigger star (where IS Ruben?). He didn’t like this latest one, Taylor and he won. He liked Fantasia and she’s hasn’t done much. He was bored by Carrie Underwood and, excuse me if I’m wrong, but isn’t she the hugest Country star there is right now? I preferred Bo myself, but I’m not paid to be right. I didn’t watch the first season, so I can’t say much about Simon and Kelly Clarkson.
While they’re the only episodes my husband will watch with me, I’m not a huge fan of the audition shows. I get the feeling that most of the terrible singers are just trying to get on TV. There are still a few who are genuinely crazy though, and I love them. I also get tired of how some singers are featured so prominently in the audition episodes. I’d rather see more auditions than have to sit through another one like that girl who swore a lot and showed her cha cha.
First couple weeks are fun. I love the people who think they are great and are not. Why they just dont play it back on an audio tape for them I dont know. I would like to see their reaction then.
I’m gonna watch, but I’m finding it harder & harder to get excited about another season of AI. The audition shows are getting repetitive; they were a novelty at first, but the novelty of seeing someone Truly Awful & Delusional has worn off.
And I’m tired of the judges. Randy, Paula & Simon should’ve spent their summer watching So You Think You Can Dance, to see that what it’s like when the show is about the performances (plus constructive criticism), and not about the judges’ bickering.
I enjoy the performance shows for a few weeks. Then I generally get sick of all the contestants. Even when there is one contestant I like, it still doesn’t make it that entertaining.
One resolution I have this year is not to get suckered into mud slinging about whom I like. If I say I like John Smith and think he’s the best singer since Jane Jones, and somebody challenges me to defend myself like this is Great Debates, I’m just going to ignore it.
