American Idol 2013 - Yeah or Nay?

New judges.

Different attitude.

First impressions only.

Based on the first week impressions only, will you watch?

Why?

Not ever again. Many reasons.

  1. There’s no point, with Simon gone.

  2. Who the hell is Nicky Menage?

  3. When Melinda Doolittle was eliminated in the semifinal round of Season Six, the American people proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are not qualified to choose whose music they like.

I watched just a little bit so it’s not a fair sample, but the three singers I saw sent to Hollywood were singers who IMHO wouldn’t have made it in the early seasons. They sounded like every other Idol contestant we’ve seen in the last few years.

If another David Cook showed up, I might watch.

The show’s been on too long. Changing up the judges won’t help.

I miss Simon too, although I didn’t watch his other show.

The problem with American Idol is that it was lazy. It had a second-rate band, second-date contestants, and the judges often just phoned it in. And that was during the good years.

In the meantime, competitors like The Voice and the X-Factor have raised the bar on talent, quality, musical production values, and they have more engaging judges and storylines. The Voice is slowly turning into an old-time variety hour of music with the judges singing and joking around, etc. It’s a lot more fun to watch.

I’ve watched AI every year since the beginning. I’m not going to watch it at all anymore.

  1. I only watched last season out of habit. Inertia.

  2. I don’t have any interest in the new judges.

  3. Fuck Melinda Doolittle. She wasn’t that great. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have to agree that the Voice (not X Factor) raised the bar on talent. But it turns out that even with the vastly better talent on the Voice that I’m just tired of listening to not-quite-there singing on any show. I just figured out tonight that watching poor quality bootleg video of Wilco on Youtube is far more satisfying than watching the best that any of these shows have to offer. Real musicians are out there making real music right now; you don’t need to watch second rate performers on any tv show.

Haven’t watched in years but stopped on it last night as I was channel surfing. Nikki minaj Wil be the downfall of this show and I’m not going to be surprised if this is the last season of AI, or at least the only season with that raging cunt on there. The bits that I saw she came across as incredibly immature and mean spirited and low low class. She wasn’t mean like Simon was mean, she behaved like a full on cunt and I don’t use that word frequently. Her immaturity shined through brightly and she is absolutely not cut out to be on tv in anything other than some gonzo porn or something.

This, minus the part about X-Factor being good, since it’s utterly terrible.

I tried it for maybe ten minutes last night. Oh, it’s horrid. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m getting old. Not even cute Keith Urban could keep me watching.

I haven’t watched a full season since Simon left and don’t plan to watch this one. Nicki Minaj just puts an exclamation point on that statement.

I was actually just thinking about the talent level - X-Factor had some good talent on it. I agree with you about the rest of the show.

Caught tonight’s episode (NOT by choice, mind you).

Good lord, it was horrible. All of it. Starting with the singers, of course. Remember when the hopeless cases, the pathetic goofballs, were sometimes funny? Now they’re endlessly irritating and get way too much screen time. To think that we ever were so vehement about William Hung. Worse, some of them are actually going to Hollywood. That shrieker who made a hash of the National Anthem…I…I just can’t explain it.

Then there are the judges. Say what you will about Paula Abdul, at least she was quiet. Now it’s all shouting and bickering and endless hysterical laughter, not to mention ludicrous gimmicks like that asinine “countdown”. Sheesh. I know that in the end your opinions mean squat, but could you at least pretend to care?

Then there’s the rest of the show. Like when that crackpot claimed that God told her to audition, so of course we had to have cheesy sound effects and Halleujah playing for about fifteen goddam minutes. America’s Funniest Home Videos did this better, folks. And played for, y’know, humor.

I am starting to look forward to ostentatious background videos and predictable numbnuts going “boooooooooo”. That’s how bad it’s gotten.

(Unrelated note: Is there any place I can buy a DVD or video feed of the first season? That’s all I want at this point. The beginning, fresh and raw, before it mutated into the overblown mess it is now. It’d be like watching those old UFCs; rough work, sure, but still entertaining to watch.)

I am a huge fan of Keith Urban and would walk across hot coals to see him. But Nicki Minage makes this unwatchable. I was really looking forward to this season because of Keith. But I can’t watch it. I may try it for a bit next week, but I expect I will last ten minutes. My guess is that this will be the last season. I can’t even comment on the talent, or lack thereof, because I am so distracted by that wench that I don’t really hear it.

I happened to catch last night’s show too because I live with someone who can’t get enough of the show and to me that girl butchered our nation’s song!

Now to me, the best person of the hour was the girl who yodeled while having a puppet on her right hand. She was awesome!!!

God bless you and her always!!!

Holly

I haven’t watched for ages! I may take a look just to see if this Nicky Minaj is as obnoxious as they say. (But there is no telling when they are going to whip up some fake drama among the judges, and she will no doubt sit there quietly, looking ridiculous, the night I happen to watch. :p…The highest point in the run of AI, IMO, was when David Cook won. I zeroed in on him early in the game and thought, they can end this thing right now, they can’t possibly pick anyone better than David Cook. … I stopped watching when that nobody was picked over Adam Lambert. It was so grossly unfair, so rigged, I was so disgusted I never wanted to watch again. Other than an occasional glance, I haven’t.

Never a big fan but I gave up when Pia got booted. 2011? Good grief, if it’s all about teens and tweens texting votes shouldn’t this whole mess be on Nickelodeon?
