American Idol 3/3/03

Was right on the top three… but John Stevens #1! WOOOO! I love this guy’s voice. I’m looking forward to him in the next round. I’m thinking Jasmine beats George for the last spot, but George can easily go to Wild Card

The top three vote getters are brought down, then they tell you who the top two are. Pretty dumb way to do it, since it just drags the thing out. Which is the point of course – more commercials.

I’m happy for John! He seems like a nice kid. Talking to people on the net and off, I began to suspect he was the top vote getter… more people have strong feelings about him than any of the other candidates. He sang better tonight than last night, must be because he’s calmed down.

Jasmine and Camille are basically the same contestant.

I forgot the spoiler warning for people on the West Coast. Maybe they just have to not read this thread until they watch the show! And does anyone really want to watch Ryan’s BS and not just know the outcome?

I missed the part where they announced all the wild cards. Is this a whole new show with 12 performers? How were they selected? And who are they, besides the three from this show?

Yes, by the judges, and they’d probably be on the Idol website tonight.

Go, John! He sounded great tonight. I said to my husband that he was more relaxed and was singing better-right before Paula and Randy said the same thing. I hope he can make it through the different style weeks.

I am also glad to see Lisa Leuschner make it to the wild card round. She deserved to make it through.

Yay John and Jasmine! So far, that makes 7 out of 8 of my predictions correct, apparently I am the ear of America.

Bonus on Katie “Flash! Bam! Alakazam!” making it back for the wild card round.

Oh, and every guy who wasn’t named Roman, apparently. Penboy will probably make the finals, none of the other guys have really impressed me thus far. George slid right from ‘pleasantly not egotistical’ into ‘needy little puppy grateful for every crumb of attention’ tonight, ugh.

West Coaster here, but I couldn’t wait (you’re right, skutir, about not wanting to hear Ryan blabble on). Oh, I’m so glad about John Stevens! Jasmine…eh. I was pulling for George, myself. I couldn’t believe Simon last night, telling him he didn’t have it. Then what, pray tell, were all those women shrieking about? I’m pretty sure George was the first male in this year’s contest to get that I’m-having-an-orgasm-right-here-in-the-balcony response. And I think that if I were John’s age, I would be totally buggin’ over him!

I have a feeling that this show is going to have, or is already having, an effect on what the listening public looks for in a singing idol. All through the first two contests, and this one, the judges, and critics in the media, have consistently been saying stuff to the effect of “Yeah, so-and-so has a unique/different/arty/creative/interesting style, but that’s not what the public wants.” Maybe not, though. Maybe it’s just a matter of, people in general are passive, and if all that gets on the radio is boy bands and Brittina clones, that’s what they’ll listen to. But given a choice, they’ll find that they do want to hear something different.

I mean, think about it. From everything I’ve read about the Beatles, it seems unanimous that a large part of their initial success was due to the fact that there was no one in the music industry doing what they did. There were other unsigned bands with their style, of course, but they were best, and got the exposure first. Once they opened the door, other bands stormed it, and rock was never the same again. So maybe people will look back on the early 2Ks as the era in which AmIdol changed the sound of American pop.

Yep, I was very pleased last night. I almost fell off the couch when they said John had the most votes. As for the Wild Cards, I was surprised they kept so many out of the last group, but as long as none of them was Lisa the Rack, I was happy.

I have no idea where I got the notion that the third person didn’t necessarily get the third most votes. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I was surprised and a little disappointed that none of the wild cards came from prior rounds. (i.e. - from before the final 32) I thought they had done that in prior years, but of course I could be wrong about that too.

Aw heck, I’m 27 and think he’s absolutely adorable. I’m contemplating a little cradle-robbing once he’s legal. And George is a local. I wish I knew him, he seems like a real sweetheart, and what a nice voice!

It’s odd… I’ve been trying ever since his first audition to figure out why it is that I like John Steven’s performing so much. Obviously, he doesn’t have the same caliber voice as some of the other contestants, and he even has trouble with pitch from time to time (although, so do almost every last one of them).

I think I figured it out last night. When he’s singing, he’s not being a big fake like a lot of the other people. He’s not putting on the exaggerated bedroom eyes look and trying to seduce the camera, he’s not shouting “Come on!” at random intervals, he’s not pretending to have fun… he’s just open and honest, and he sings with what seems to me to be genuine - not manufactured - emotion.

Meanwhile, I’m thrilled to see the return of both Katie Webber and Lisa Leuchner, among my favorites so far for reasons both legit (I thought both gave great auditions) and shallow.

I can’t see or hear Lisa Leuchner’s name without think “Lisa Loobner,” the geeky Saturday Night Live character Gilda Radner created!

I think what it comes down to is that he seems a whole lot more secure about his singing than most of the others. He has this really interesting voice and he doesn’t try to hide behind fancy mellismas and stuff, he just gets out there and sings. He’s honest. I really like that.

You know what? John Stevens knocked me down, and I think StoryTeller nailed it for me as to why. But I do think that he has a great voice. He’s one of the few singers who probably could do justice to a vintage Elton John song. In fact, I guess now I can forget about Michael What’s-his-name.

I must be the only person on the planet who’s disappointed with last night’s results. :frowning: I voted for nearly the whole 2 hours for George, and when his line was busy, I was throwing a few votes Susie’s way. I think they were, far and away, the best singers and performers of group 4.

John Stevens is alright, but his voice is still way too immature (he may not do all that melisma crap, but his vibrato is almost as bad as goatgirl Carmen) and hearing that baby-faced, 16 year old boy singing She’s Always A Woman To Me put the ICK in squicky. He’s adorable and he has lots of potential, but he’s not even close to being good enough. And I feel sortof the same about Jasmine – she’s got a very pretty voice, but doesn’t use it well At All. She’s got a loooooooot of work to do and a lot of bad habits to break to have what it really takes to have a successful singing career.

Well, thankfully George and Susie made it to the Wildcard round. Those 2, plus Lisa Leuschner and Katie Webber are my top picks so far. But if Tiara Purifoy and/or Jennifer Hudson pick better songs, they could pull out in front, as well, because they’re both clearly very good singers. The Wildcard round is gonna be the toughest one so far, I think.

Nope, you’re not wrong about that. Last year they had several wild card folks who were cut and not in the Top 32. Carmen Rasmussen was cut and she ended up being Simon’s pick for the Top 12. And to this day, I still think Chip Days was robbed!

I didn’t like any of the female singers in this group. It seemed to me like they were in a shouting contest. Who can opening widest and belt out the highest note longest? And frankly, that high note by Jasmine sounded flat to me.

I definitely agree with you: John Stevens’ voice is not as accomplished or developed as some of the others, at least IMO. But here’s the thing: I’m judging these people in my own head based on which of them could produce a CD that I would actually buy and listen to. For me, there are two kinds of performers for whom I will do this: (1) really outstanding singers, who can make me want to listen just with the quality and power of their voice alone; and (2) interesting, honest, performers, who may not sing all that well but who make me want to listen based on the feeling they put into the song.

The problem with type (1) on a show like AMERICAN IDOL is that frankly, none of the singers are good enough to make me want to listen just on their voice quality alone. The best of them - LaToya, probably - still aren’t a patch on Whitney Houston in those terms. Why would I want to buy a CD of LaToya singing Whitney Houston covers and knock-offs, when I could just listen to an actual Whitney Houston CD? John Stevens, on the other hand, would produce a recording that would be totally unique, and to me, at least, interesting.

Ah, well… this is what makes the show so interesting, I guess.
