American Idol 3/3/03

Well, someone has to do it… why not me?

Susie Vulaca - I honestly don’t remember her performance. The curse of going first, I suppose. I don’t remember her being bad though. I reluctantly put her at number 2 this week.

John Preator - Not good. I don’t remember him well either, but I remembered not being impressed. No.

John Stevens - The Rat Pack Guy! Nice voice, but I don’t see him making it to the next round. He’s only 16 though so maybe in a year or two he could do better. I could definitely see him doing voice work though, like commercials and cartoons. He might get third in the voting, but not much better. No.

Heather Piccinini - Looked funny, sounded funnier. No.

Jasmine Trias - All right! Hawaii representing again. :stuck_out_tongue: She’s cute and sounded great. My pick for first place.

George Huff - The “I’m not old, dammit!” guy. Still looks old. Sounded like he needed to clear his throat. Best male of the competition? Maybe, but that’s not saying a whole hell of a lot. No.

Lisa Wilson - Holy flurking schnit. She’s shmokin hot… as long as she’s not singing. She looked worse and worse as the song went on. And I think she only sang one or two notes. The rest of the time she switched between talking normally and shouting the words out. Definitely the worst performance of the four weeks. Can’t feel too bad for her though, the exposure on the show should help her solidify a decent modeling career. But singing? No.

Tiara Purifoy - I agreed with everything Simon said. It must have been getting hot in that studio, and the audience got a little light-headed. I didn’t like her performance at all. No.

Suzy–Gods know she can thing, but while I like her, I don’t feel compelled to even think of voting for her. I agree with Simon. She’s forgettable.

John Preator–Decent. That’s all.

Heather P.–Looked like she was taking a dump and then smelt it. Meh. I’m with the judges. Yea, cheesy is the right word.

John Stevens IV–I’m no fan of Frank Sinatra sort of music, but I just adore this kid. WHEE!! He has a very nice, distinctive voice and he’s not forgettable. Awwwwww… Not the best song choice in the world, but I do agree with Simon. Not the “terrible performer”, but the “different from everyone else” part. I hope he gets through too.

Jasmine Trias–Very good. Well done. I do think she’ll get votes, but she doesn’t seem to have the fanbase John and George do. I think she’ll get in the top three, but I don’t know if she’ll make the finals. If not, WILD CARD!

George–Started off rocky and does have the melisma thing, but overall, very impressive! Loved it! Best so far. I’m almost positive that he’ll make the finals.

Lisa Wilson–You love American Idol? Well, I HATE YOU! I always have. Missed notes left and right. I liked the raspyness in her voice, but overall, blah. I agree with Paula, she tried too hard and suffered from it. I’m also with Simon. If there is any sort of justice, she won’t make the top 3.

Tiara–I really think “I wanna dance with somebody” is the kiss of death for song choices. Big voice, but too many missed notes where it counted. I’m content with Latoya and Fantasia. Best Performance? Of the song, yea. But, in this group? Good, sure, but not top three.

Top 3:

  1. George
  2. John
  3. Jasmine

I thought this group was worse than the infamous Group #2. I didn’t like any of 'em. They should all be voted off the island. (Oh, Lordy, I’m getting really crabby!)

Susie: Decent…just decent.

John “Scott Hamilton” Preator: Horrible. How did he get this far?

John “Teen Martin” Stevens. I disagreed with the judges. i liked him. I think he has a nice, natural, relaxed quality to his voice. He sings in key and it’s refreshing not to hear all that damned melisma.

Heather: Simon was right, her facial expressions were hideous and her “ooh, ooh oohs” were ridiculous.

Jasmine: She missed some notes but she’s likable and has potential. She has a shot at getting through just by virtue of being in such a weak group.
George: Started off out of key but got a lot better. How can you not like this guy? With a little coaching he can be a great singer and Simon is wrong about his charisma. He may not look like a “pop idol” but he has a light around him, like Paula said.
Lisa “the Rack” Wilson: Hella sexy but the judges said exactly what I was thinking, she yelled the song rather than sung it. She used volume to hide a lack of range. Simon was right that it sounded like a bar band type of performance. Sexy as hell, though.

Tiara: AI needs to enforce a ban on “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” She started off very well but then totally lost it at the modulation and never got it back. I think she was trying too hard, like Simon said. I think she can do better.

Top three: George, Jasmine, Tiara

I’m guessing that George and Jasmine will go through but I’d like to hear more of John Stevens.

I have to agree with you on most counts.

Susie - I think she was good. I can see her and Jasmine moving on this week.

John Stevens - I like him but the attempt to sing pop just did not work. As young as he is though, he does have time to improve. I can definitely see him doing voice over work of some sort because the Rat Pack sound seems to be popular now on commercials.

Heather - I didn’t think her singing was that bad, but I notice a trend for women on this show to look like they are doing some type of squatty exercise when they sing. Unfortunately this leads to speculation as to their regularity or comparisons with chickens laying eggs (not something a performer wants to be compared with). It also leads to “terrible performer” comments from Simon.

George - When Randy said he was probably the best male performer so far, I decided that there must have been something wrong with the sound on my TV because what I heard started off pretty bad and stayed that way. It was also very dull. I was amazed that there was not a better performer that they could have picked to fill in for the guy that was kicked off.

Lisa - I don’t agree with the hot part. Maybe it’s just hard to think of anything complimentary when she made my ears bleed. Between the squat exercises, the screaming, the shouting and the flat notes when she actually tried to sing I almost turned the show off for good right then and there. It was painful. I was surprised she wasn’t reamed out more by the judges, then again maybe she was and I was still suffering the temporary hearing loss and missed it?

Tiara - I missed Simon’s comments. I think she has a nice voice but I don’t think she should move on. Paula saying she didn’t need to overuse her voice said it nicely but frankly, I am so tired of these performers that think they need to use all those vocal tricks, it really isn’t enjoyable to hear. If you have a nice voice and can carry a tune then you don’t need to do all that extra fluffy stuff.

Susie Vulaca: Boring. I’m so sick of five notes per syllable.
John Preator: Another karaoke singer.
Heather: her facial EXPRESSIONS were ugly. That’s what Simon said, and he was right. Her facial expressions WERE ugly, and it was an ugly performance. God, people don’t listen.
John: He doesn’t sound that much like Dino or Frank, he just sings songs from that era. He’s a good singer, but this wasn’t his best performance.
Jasmine: I don’t understand the judges at all. She’s cute and all, but I wasn’t impressed by her performance.
George: Probably the best one this evening.
Lisa: The worst of the lot. It was embarrassing.
Tiara: She sucked. Randy and Paula are crazy, and Simon is right. She was terrible.

Predictions: George Huff and Jasmine Trias.
Preference: John Stevens. He won’t win, but he’ll be fine without this contest. He’d be better off where he can just be himself without the judges jerking him around: be less like the brat pack/be more like the brat pack.

One thing I like about John Stevens is, he just sings, he doesn’t sing five notes for every syllable. I’m getting pretty sick of that.

Easy ones first:

Heather: That was singing?
Lisa: Another one that I personally don’t like. Glad she tanked.
John P: Him and Heather should start a group called the Monotones.

Now the rest:
George: He was almost good.
John S: I guess he was good if you like that style of singing. Not a favorite.

My top 3 in no particular order:
Jasmine
Susie
Tiara

They aren’t in any particular order because I none of them really stood out. They were all good.

Even though Simon was being especially nasty today, I agree with him on one thing. Diana Ross doesn’t sing that well.

I forgot to say that I was agreeing with Slacker’s assessment.

Lisa blew so hard, I loved it!! After all her BS during the auditions, boofing around in a bikini instead of practicing with her group, putting off the song-writing work until the last minute, Little Ms.EverythingsBeenHandedToMe fricking blew it! I have never reveled in someone falling flat on their face like I did tonight. Open you’re mouth a little bigger honey, maybe we can put on a miner’s helmet and look for your talent hidden down there.

Suzy was cool, bit of the going first curse of being less memorable, but I liked her personality and since it’s Melisma Idol, she’ll do.

Love John Stevens, I might just cry if he doesn’t move forward tomorrow. He went contemporary, trying to follow the judges advice, didn’t work as well as it should have but he’s so got the chops to move to the finals.

Heather didn’t get very far from being like Kim Caldwell, did she? Oh, wait, Kim couldn’t sing well either, but had better stage presence. Buhbye, Heather, thanks for playing.

Jasmine was lovely, great potential to improve, not jaded or overly produced sounding, I hope she goes forward.

George, John P and Tiara were unimpressive.

I didn’t like John Steven’s song choice, but I still preferred him over everyone else. I will indeed be upset if he doesn’t go through.

My next choice would either be George or Jasmine.

Heather’s facial expressions reminded me of that one Twilight Zone episode where the dying man asks his family to wear masks that reveal their true characters. Ugh.

Lisa Wilson: I could have sung that better. Especially considering she didn’t sing, rather she shouted.

Everyone else was forgettable. Except John Preator - my roommate kept calling him “Art Garfunkel” while I snickered at that through his performance. Poor kid, to have a receding hairline at such a young age.

Can we please just ban all performances of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion songs from American Idol forevermore? I can hardly judge the talent of anyone singing that tired old crap, especially when they melisma all over everything. Maybe that’s why they pick it.

It really was a bad group, all in all. My picks are Jasmine and John Stevens, and I only still like John because he has that different sound. He comes across as a weak and nervous performer. And his song choice made me giggle. “She’s Always a Woman to Me”? So that would make her what…Nineteen?

And Tiara was awful. Her facial expressions said, “I wanna dance with somebody, and if they don’t I’m going to hit them!”

They pretty much all sucked. None of them will make it.

Heather Paccininni ~ I’m confused. Wasn’t she the “Come To My Window” one? If so, I did notice that she was screaming. I was glad to see the judges said something about it. But she wasn’t the ugly facial expressions one, was she?

Lisa Wilson ~ She’s the one who partied all night in the pool, instead of writing a song. I couldn’t believe she had made it that far. And then before she performed it, she said something like, “If I forget the words, must be something in the water.” Yeah, YOU! I never noticed her boobs before last night, which I figure explains part of her success until now. But she’s gone. And I’m happy. I’m just sad she made it this far.

Jasmine From Hawaii ~ She was one of the better ones, but that’s not saying much. Simon was right. She might make it cause she has a pretty face, nice smile, and a flower in her hair. I don’t think her performance was anywhere near as outstanding as anyone from last week.

Tiara ~ “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”… Judges were right. She went to hell and back on that song. I agree with Simon, it was a mess.

John Stevens ~ He’s good. I just don’t think he’s a “pop idol”. I think he’d do well to get a record contract elsewhere and record music that’s more his genre.

George the “Old Guy” ~ I thought the beginning was shaky, but he pulled through in the end. He’ll probably make it.

Like I said, I’m confused. But I do know that whomever Simon told had ugly facial expressions was right. While I was watching, she reminded me of a bad porno. Complete with the orgasm-faking faces. That’s what her face was: Orgasm-Faking-Face.

I agreed with everything Simon said this week. I usually do. I was just surprised how Randy and Paula didn’t spot the things I did.

I liked Susie, red-headed guy, and Tiara. I guess Jasmine is good, but her whole Hawaii hand gesture and blah blah gets on my nerves. We get it, she’s from Hawaii.

lol… I’m pretty sure that just comes naturally. I’ve been to Hawaii several times, and people do that when you let them cut in front of you in traffic. It’s everywhere.

I think Simon was dead on when he said that it’s a lot different sitting there in the studio and watching it at home. Simon has simply gotten good at spotting a shoddy performance in that situation. Randy and Paula don’t seem to have that knack.

Last night I really reached my limit for what passes as “witty repartee” between Seacrest and Simon, mainly because Seacrest is such a fucking moron. My favorite part of the night–the singers were mostly unimpressive to me–was Simon telling Ryan, “That’s why you’re a host, and I’m a judge.” Brilliant. Simon can wear all the slightly-too-snug v-neck sweaters he wants; at least he’s not blowing sunshine up everyone’s ass.

I’d vote John Stevens through just to see what the hell he’ll do with the categories for the next rounds. His bit was a real snooze to me, though. George Huff is enthusiastic and seems to be one of the least egotistical people out there, but he didn’t rock my world either. Hesitantly, I think it’s going to be Jasmine and George in the top two, and maybe John Stevens in third.

I thought Simon was surprisingly mellow on Lisa “The Rack” – she was worse than many that never made it to Hollywood. Easily the worst of the final 32–and with the Roman brothers, that’s saying somethin’.

Simon was also dead-on with Tiara. She has a good instrument, but no idea how to use it.

John Stevens is damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If he sings nothing but Frank & Dino, he has no range. If he goes outside his range, he fails. But I’d love to see him go on – and hell, so far we have exactly one male in the final 12, and I don’t see any others coming back as wild cards.

And I thought Martha the Air Force chick was better than anyone who was on last night’s show!

And I’m getting really tired of the Ryan-vs-Simon bickering. It isn’t funny anymore.

FWIW, I’m tired of the Simon - Ryan bickering too.

I have a question though. Has it been unequivocally stated that the top three vote getters get to come down and sit in the chairs before the top two are revealed? Obviously the top two vote getters are there, but I’m suspicious of the third person. I think they might just be picking someone to balance the appearance of the final three (e.g. - by gender) rather than actually having the third highest vote getter there.

I’ll have to listen more closely tonight to what Ryan says about the final three.

I thought Jasmine was pretty good, John Stevens was excellent, and no one else was better than fair. I’m not really into music but I would buy John Steven’s album tomorrow, I think he is that good. Randy and Paula seemed to be watching a different show than me for most of the night. Simon was almost 100% correct in his assesments as always.

I’m not 100% certain, but I’m fairly sure the top three are indeed the finalists with the most votes. Both from what Ryan says, to who has ended up there. Really the only surprise so far was the handsome fella from the first week. Other than that - most people seem to be picking the top three correctly pretty consistently.

Jasmine, John Stevens, and George were my top three.

I guess in a few minutes the East Coast will know the entirety of the top three :D.
