AMERICAN IDOL 4/6 - Elton John Night

OK…as glad as I am about tonight’s result, I have to chime in about my biggest annoyance of the evening. As Ryan was assigning each contestant to a group, every time he’d say “You are in group…B”, the audience would break out in wild applause…even though they hadn’t been told which group was which. Morons.

Yes.

I have to wonder if

all the phone lines in Hawaii went out last night?

I’m also glad to see that Miss Thang was not in the top group, maybe it will be a humbling experience for her?
For top group, I think it HAS to be Group C. I have serious doubts that George Huff was not #1. Here is my belief of the rankings:

Group C:

 1. George Huff
 2. LaToya
 3. Jennifer

Group B:
4. Fantasia
5. John Peter Lewis
6. John Stevens

Group A:
7. Diana
8. Jasmine
9. Camille (OUT!)
skutir, I heard him say who the top group was. You assumed correctly.

Are you saying you heard this on the show? Because I don’t know how I could have missed it. And I had not assumed either B or C was on top, just pointed out that others thought C was on top but there was at least reason to wonder… so which was it?

Ah, but Jasmine and Camille were sharing the Hawaiian voting bloc. Now Jasmine might get the full attention of the bloc and pick up a lot more votes that way.

I don’t remember him saying C was the top group, but if they treated the groups like they do the bottom 3 individuals then I think it’s logical to presume that the highest vote getter of the three gets sent to safety first. Also, I think with those three it’s logical to assume they were the top 3.

I think it’s illogical to assume that JPL and John S could have been in the top 3, yes, many voters are stupid but hopefully not *that * many.

Am I the only person who heard him say that? I think it was after he sent them back to the bleachers.

So, there is a god after all!

But I sure don’t get the two Johns in the middle group!! I suppose what Simon says is true: You can vote for whoever you want. After all, this IS America!

If C was the top voting group and Ryan does send the top of the bottom 3 back first (neither of which I’m sure is a given), I’d speculate the rankings are:

 1. George
 2. LaToya
 3. Jennifer
 4. Fantasia
 5. John Stevens
 6. JPL
 7. Diana
 8. Jasmine
 9. Camile

If those are the rankings, it’s really not as messed up as people think. If two of the top three have been on the seal, though, it means that voting is pretty close.

Brynda (or anyone else who knows), what did Simon say? I didn’t see the show last night.

He said that Elton John had probably thrown his television out of his hotel window after seeing her performance of “Yellow Brick Road.”

Thanks, skutir.

And Simon was probably right ;).

Not too likely, since Sir Elton said very positive things about her, which surprised the heck outta me.

True or not, I still think it was needlessly cruel. Say you don’t like her performance. Say why you don’t like her performance. Fine. But to say that she pissed off/disappointed someone who she clearly idolizes was crossing the line. It didn’t need to be said that way.

I agree. I used to be kind of amused by Simon, but now I just flat out don’t like him. You would think it would be hard enough for the judges even when the criticisms are legitimate, but he goes out of his way to be hurtful. (I saw a clip of him telling some girl – not sure who – that he finally figured out who she reminded him of and who he thought she looked like…Jay Leno!) It had nothing whatsoever to do with her talent or performance, and it’s probably something she will carry with her for the rest of her life. What a complete and utter jerk!

Regarding Elton, I’ve found that he’s always very gracious and supportive of up and coming talent, and I guess he’s that way also just to be kind. He seems also to be completely lacking in ego or snobbery, musical or otherwise, which I think is especially remarkable given his talent and outspokenness.

Simon was for the most part right on. William Shatner did better renditions than some of these wannabes.

Only thing Simon didn’t say is “You make me wish that William Hung is onstage.”

Now THAT would be cruel.

They have never revealed that rankings before, all that was for sure was the bottom three. Anyone have any speculation why they did this.

Possibilities,
A: is to feed some contestants humble pie and spur others forward to action.
B: encourage more votes for the low ranks.
C: Profit?

What are they doing?

They didn’t reveal anything more than they ever have. They did not say which group (B or C) had more votes, and they didn’t talk about rankings. 1-6 are still a secret.

Moreover, I don’t think they really say who of the bottom three got the most votes. Ryan says “I’m going to send one of you back to safety.” He does not say that that person has the most votes of the three.
Did anybody else notice that Camille took some liberties with the lyrics? She still sounded terrible, of course. But last night she sounded terrible and self-indulgent.

See ya, sweatband.
