American Idol 4/8/03

I think they should call this the “David Robinson” clause. He did the same thing after he graduated from the Naval Academy.

I didn’t get it. What is the inside joke?

No, he did not. David Robinson was drafted in 1987, but did not report to the Spurs until 1989 because he had to serve out his two-year stint with the Navy.

IIRC, The song was originally popularized on the TV show Family Ties as the “theme song” for Alex Keaton’s romance.

Carmen: PG version of an R-rated song. It reminded me of the talent portion of the Miss America pageant.

Kim C: Look great. Started really badly, but I thought she recovered, and it ended up OK. Still near the bottom of the group though.

Paula: 6 number 1 songs?! Who’da thunk it!

Overall: One of the highest overall quality shows so far. Even the worst (Carmen) was way better than some of jokers remaining at this point in last year’s show.

Question: Do the songs seem really short to you? They should cut down on the “guest judge” intro, and let the people sing a bit longer.

I’ll just say that every criticism people have given about Clay is equally true of Ruben. And Clay has the better voice. Clay wins it… or should.

To further this hijack… The US Navy says it’s five years of obligatory service after graduation.

Eh. I stand (partially) corrected.

I have to say I agree. In fact, as I said earlier, Ruben has very repetitive movemnets when he’s on stage. And he hasn’t changed his style of singing once.

I think it’s a gut level thing, Ruben just seems cuddly and sweet. And even though they’ve both been stuck in a groove since the first minute, Ruben’s groove is more Luther Vandross than, say, Mandy Patinkin, and this show is about pop. Finally, Ruben seems more comfortable in his own skin in some respects, where Clay had to be made over. Poor Clay, I’ll be he gets sick of people telling him he doesn’t look like he sounds.

But I’m still a hardcore Clay fan. He really does give me chills, just cuz I think he’s so darm adorable.

I guess Carmen and Simon made up?

What the hell was that?!

Carmen was not in the bottom three?!

And what the HELL was that Ford commercial with Ruben and Carmen? I felt like I had stepped into a nightmare resulting from a bad seafood dinner.

Did anyone else notice Clay and Carmen cuddling at the end of the “All Night Long” number?

And Kelly’s song kinda sucked my ass.

My feelings exactly. Even Carmen looked surprised she wasn’t in the bottom three. I can’t believe that many people either thought she was good or gave her that many sympathy votes.
Rickey may have gone soon anyway, but Carmen is the one who should gone tonight.
I really wish we could vote people off instead of on.

WHAAAAAAAAA???

Kim C is STILL THERE? She was HORRIBLE! She’s getting worse every week!

Carmen I want to like but her singing is just not there. I figured it would be her or Kim C, because they were both way down there.

But Rickey??? I expected him to go sometime in the next three weeks or so, but BEFORE KIM C? I HATE her!

Who the heck is voting out there, tone deaf imbeciles??? Carmen should be packing her bags, not Rickey. . . yet.

I liked the Ruben/Carmen Ford commercial. That Ruben is a sight in top hat and tails. . . and he moves good for a Big Guy! Carmen? Meh. Just another insipid blonde face.

Kelly? If this is what happens to The American Idol, Ruben should withdraw right now.

They are trying to make Kelly into another Britney and that’s just wrong … not to mention we don’t need another Britney.

What was up with Rickys goodbye video? Did he know he was gone or do they make everyone do one of those?

HOLY COW.

I mean, OMG.

geez.

I’m dumbfounded.

:frowning:

Gumbercules, they make a video for all the contestants, updating every now and then to add content on.

I too noticed the Clay/Carmen physical repartee. They both seem to be very friendly and playfully touch other people, but they always end up giving the most attention to each other. I wonder if it’s just because they always seem to get paired up in opening numbers or because there’s something deeper going on.
Kelly’s song, while vapid, had a catchy chorus and I did enjoy it. What was up with going in a 360 as the camera did a circle around her, though?
Also, does anyone else think that the show is becoming a lot more Carmen-centric? When the top 12 were revealed, she seemed as though she was just stuck there as an afterthought, but now she manages to be saved from being voted off/appearing in the bottom three (despite her consistently weak performances) and also appears alongside Ruben in the commercial? Not to mention the fact that there were several Carmens in any given shot of that song.
Speaking of Ruben, I’ve also decided that I believe he can make anything sound good, even a thinly veiled ad for Ford.

WTF?

Ok, this show is either rigged or the voters are a bunch of superficial, musically illiterate teenagers. Who the hell is voting for Carmen? Why no love for Kim L. ? She’s the best female singer in the competition.

Are people voting solely on looks? I can’t figure this thing out.

How many times can Kim C keep escaping the noose? She’s turning into this year’s Nikki.
Arrgghhh!!! Why do I watch this show?

Maybe when they say 9 million people voted, they mean that Simon got to vote 8,999,999 times and the top winner of everyone calling in was assigned one vote. That’s the only logical explanation I can come up with.
