American Idol: 5/25 (final two)

For anyone who still cares:

the winner is Fantasia

Somebody mentioned the margin of error, and DD getting jobbed on her last song. I’ve also heard rumors (unconfirmed) that there were problems with the phones. However, I think the results would have been the same.

Glad the season is over and I refuse to ever get sucked into it again.

But…but…c’mon skutir! It might be better next year! And since the rules state no one in the final 32 gets a second shot, we might even see us a new and improved scooter girl back for more, and you wouldn’t even know! :frowning:

And nexct week, Canadian Idol Season 2 starts

Whoop de poop, the person the powers that be determined to be the winner during the initial auditions won. Big surprise, just like last year. I really think this is orchestrated.

I checked in tonight for the last few minutes for the results and I took a few peeks at the final to see the judges comments but I could not listen to more than a few seconds of Fantasia or stand to watch her. Could the judges and everyone else have crawled any farther up Fantasia’s butt in their praise? It was getting sickening, I’m glad it’s over. Now all I have to do is turn off all the shows Fantacy is going to show up on. Her voice gets more and more grating to me, and her personality even worse.

I’m with skutir, I don’t want to get sucked into this show again either.

I don’t think either of those girls looked the part.

Yeah yeah… I know, they were picked for vocal ability, but neither of them will go anywhere IMHO because of their un refined apperance.

I agree that the judges probably picked their winner early on, but I don’t really care, ‘cause unlike last year it was a relatively easy choice. There was a large gap in talent between Fantasia and everyone but Latoya – who was absolutely robbed and should have come in #2 at least – and so why on earth shouldn’t she have been praised by the judges as the best? Yes, they did the same last year with Ruben, but in Fantasia’s case, she actually kept earning praise; just about every performance she gave was a risktaking success. OTOH, Ruben started out well, never really grew or developed and basically coasted the entire contest on the judges’ orgasms. (Ew. Sorry for the visual.)

Now, Latoya had a much more pleasing, richer and better controlled instrument than Fantasia does, but her performances lacked sparkle and connection with either the audience or the camera. She has dignity and grace, and I could listen to her sing the phonebook; when she makes her inevitable recording I’ll be there buying it!

Still, thinking of a real star, I expect something more. I wanted something different than the standard R&B singer, even a really really talented one. That’s why I loved Clay, and that’s why I love Fantasia. Unlike 99% of the other AI contestants they have original sounds, and most of all are talented performers who never coasted and never stopped taking risks.

Dang, I dunno what they’re putting in the water down in North Carolina, but keep it up!

BTW, I have yet to understand what the problem with Fantasia’s personality is. She’s humble, she’s funny, she’s down to earth, and kinda kooky without being obnoxious about it (I’m lookin’ at you, Vanessa!). Unlike other viewers, I never found her to “whore” her kid out for votes … and I was watching for that sorta thing when I saw how far Josh Gracin coasted by on patriotism and fatherhood. Fantasia loves her kid, and like most parents she’s proud and wants to show her off.

Everyone understandably made a big deal about Diana being only sixteen, but Fantasia isn’t much older. Having a voice like hers at 19, along with the ability to sell the emotions of a song, is damn rare. Is her talent still somewhat raw, her personality uncoached? Yep. Time and experience will take care of that. I hope she won’t lose her freshness and vivaciousness in the process.

Yeah… but what I don’t get about the Canadian version is, is it really necessary to have judges that are clones of the American judges? We got the black chubby guy, the blondish singer female and the rude British guy… They even look alike!

Worst. Finalists. Ever.
The individual and collective singing abilities are only surpassed by the flawed voting system that put them in the final two.

Not exactly. They couldn’t find ine Simon so they chose two half-one

What a stupid show. I’m going back to watching CSI and Law and Order shows.

My first time watching it, I never saw the first two seasons, and barely know who the winners are.

But, I saw this whole season through, though I missed last night’s “finale” thanks to the darn Dish Network’s crappy product.

I just cannot for the life of me figure out why everyone on the show thought Fantasia was the second coming of Elvis or something.

Did anyone ever close their eyes and listen without simply being in love with what a kooky “star-like” performer she was?

Can you say “ALVIIIIIIIINNNNN!!!”? What a grating, irritating, NASALLY voice. This girl is basically a glorified gospel soloist (and isn’t it interesting how she sang every single number throughout the entire show in that mode??), and yet professionals in the music industry just think she walked on water.

Give Diana a few years to mature and get put on a decent workout/diet program and you’ve got another Leanne Rimes. Amy Adams, definitely Nashville bound, LaToya? Pretty velvety smooth voice, she’ll sell CDs, though her type of music isn’t my cup of tea.

But Fantasia?

Interesting performer or not, after all the fuss, I’d still wager she fizzles out before she spends the money. She’s a one-trick pony with a kazoo for a vocal instrument.

If I may, please allow me to get in one last blech. Blech.

At least it’s over.
Now we can concern ourselves with something really important: THE AMAZING RACE (premieres July 6)!

if you recall from the auditions, Fantasia nearly didn’t get in, because Randi said no and Paula said yes, and Simon said that he didn’t think that Fantasia would get very far but he liked the unusual, Macy Gray quality of her voice. Given also that Fantasia was in the bottom two several times, I’d say that your statement lacks any merit.

[QUOTE]

I didn’t realize how bad the final two really were until I heard Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard sing with them last night. Both Kelly and Ruben sing effortlessly. Diana sounds like she’s screaming every single note. Plus she misses a lot of notes. I think Fantasia was definitely the right choice, though her voice does grate on my nerves. Another American Idol winner’s CD I won’t be buying!

Well, I didn’t see the earlier shows in their entirety, so I did not see those comments. I saw comments like “you don’t even need this show to have a career” and interestingly enough Randy (whom you said said “No”) has been saying that he thought she was the best from the beginning, even though at one point he said LaToya would win. I also recall lots of comments about her (and LaToya) being in a whole different league than the other contestants. So maybe it wasn’t decided from the “beginning” but it probably was somewhere around the final 32.

As for her being in the bottom two twice, you forget that people were power-dialing for certain favorites who stayed in longer than they should. This hurt the better performers who left too soon. Also, as you can probably tell by the comments people seem to either love her or hate her, she probably didn’t get many sympathy votes thrown her way until she did get into the bottom two those times.

Well, I love Fantasia and I’m glad she won. I even jumped off the couch when they made the annoucement. Out of all the American Idol winners and runners- up, Fantasia is the only one who I would buy a cd of.

Btw, what is up with Ruben’s song? Is he trying to be disgusting? He needs to hire some new songwriters, because that one was total crap. I’m not sure what kind of marketing they have going on for that man, but he needs to stick with his old image rather than copy of all the smarmy r & b guys.

I couldn’t have said it better.

For me, the defining moment of Fantasia’s personality was when she back-talked Simon and said “You don’t know Class.” Class isn’t telling people you’re classy. And Fantasia ain’t.

Mostly she bugs me. It doesn’t have to make sense. I just don’t like her.

I liked Diana by default, but ya just gotta love Fantasia’s unpredictable personality. I damn near fell off the couch laughing when she finally stopped hugging Diana and Ryan was trying to get her to stop crying and say something, anything, y’know probably “thank you” or another reiteration of how blessed she is…something!

You are AI 2004!! You get million dollar recording contract, promotion beyond your wildest dreams, yadda yadda yadda. What do you have to say?
“I broke my shoe.” :smack:
Bahahahaha
