American Idol adds another judge

More girl power. Wow!
Poor Paula won’t be the only petunia in the skunk cabbage patch any more - the AI powers added a fourth judge. Kara DioGuardi will join the panel.

Methinks this move is two fold -
Paula has completely lost it and can’t be trusted to speak/sit at a table/show up at all any more.
They hope someone with more recording industry chops can help put forward singers that have a prayer of a future career. (That ain’t gonna happen until they stop making the contestants sing 30+ year old standards in genres that have not been aired for decades. The current format selects for dinner theatre/Broadway entertainers, not folks who can sell a pop record).

I don’t like it. I liked the chemistry of the three judges just as it was. Now we have to spend more time listening to blather?!

If they’re going to “fix” the damn show, start with the voting process.

  1. I would not be surprised if this is the last season for at least one of the other judges; Kara is there to help with the transition.

  2. It could be good for the show if she does a few things. One, she needs to actually critique the contestants in useful ways, unlike Paula. Two, she should be more polite than Simon. Three, she should be more focused than Randy, who relies on pitch and missed notes for the majority of his critiques.

  3. Haven’t they already filmed the auditions? Wikipedia says the auditions ended about a week ago. I guess she’s joining them for Hollywood Week, which must be soon.

Dung Beetle, how would you fix the voting process?

This was someone else’s idea, from a thread last season, but I believe the idea was to let us vote for who should go. When we have decided who the three worst are, let the judges axe* one of them.

*Oh, very well…let them just send one home, then.

It’s a very, very poor idea, irrespective of who the new judge is.

Canadian Idol strated with four judges. It just doesn’t work. There’s a dynamic to a three-person panel that a four-person panel lacks. You’re also, by necessity, spending more time on the judges, who are the secondary attraction, and less on the contestants, who are the primary draw.

Of all the problems with Idol, I can’t think of any that are helped by adding a judge. And I can think of some that’ll just be worse (endless backchat between Seacrest and the judges…pointless rambling by brain-addled judges…)

Paula Abdul is “concerned” about a new judge.

Maybe because Paula knows her days are numbered?

Yep. If they brought in a black man, Randy Jackson would be concerned instead. Simon is irreplaceable, though.

I only know Kara from some of the songs she’s written for some Disney projects. Pretty catchy.

Although having four judges seems somewhat troublesome. What if two say “yes” and two say “no” during the audition process? Who breaks the tie?
