What might life be like for an American who moves to Uruguay?
What if she’s a queer 65-year-old on Social Security disability who speaks Spanish moderately well and plays Spanish guitar and is learning to play “La Cumparsita”?
First and foremost, the attraction of Uruguay is LGBTQ rights enshrined in law.
I know nothing at all about Uruguay (aside from remembering when it was ruled by a military dictatorship) but even if LGBTQ rights are enshrined in law, that doesn’t mean that people are going to be welcoming or friendly.
Well, you said it all right: You know nothing at all about Uruguay. For starters, the Global Democracy Index cites only three Western Hemisphere countries as full democracies: Canada, Costa Rica, and Uruguay.
Uruguay is one of the three or four best countries in the world for LGBTQ rights. Cis-het guys may not take much note of that, let alone care, but for me it’s a matter of life and death. Republicans intend to make it illegal/impossible for people like me to exist. I just rewatched Cabaret, thanks to a recent Dope thread link. I get how the Jews felt when the Nazis took over. Not only that. The Nazis rounded up LGBTQ people and put them on the trains to the camps, don’t forget.
