America's Got Talent is baaaaaaaack!

Simon Cowell replaces Howard Stern as a judge which is too bad I liked Stern.

Good acts so far, 45 minutes into the show.

I love magic acts, I don’t try to figure it out, I don’t want to know how it all works. I love the mystery of it all when it is done well. I love the clairvoyant that was on earlier.

Wow. Hara was awesome-sauce.

I like the show and how the judges get along with one another. Open to seeing how Simon Cowell does as a judge, I have not seen him since X Factor which was cancelled a few years back.

Cowell was not a jerk as he has been on other shows (I know it is mainly just a role he plays). So I found him quite good. I hope it stays that way.

Some great acts tonight.

My favorite act of the night is the Tape Guy, his “Lady In Red” act was pretty genius, wish I had thought of it!

As for Simon Cowell, I think he figured it would have been pathetic to have the same mean guy shtick as American Idol a decade ago.

Tape Guy was the funniest thing I have seen in a good long time. I was laughing my ass off from the oven mitts and ESPECIALLY to Lady in Red.

I love AGT, I really, truly do. However, I miss having a DVR because I hate those godawful montages and I honestly couldn’t give a shit about their backstory if I tried. Tell me who they are AFTER they’ve made it, I don’t care about before.

It’s also so easy to predict if the interviewed act will be good or bad, so it’s doubly wasting my time.

Laura Bretan definitely deserved to be greenlighted straight to the live trials. I was stunned when I heard that 13 year old sing.

I loved it. I’m not sure of his name, but the guy with the birds and I’m guessing some kind of digital display was good. I liked Tape Man, too, but what does he do next?

The older couple who sang Viva Las Vegas entertained me, but I thought Laura Bretan was the best of the night.

The bird guy was Hara. I really enjoyed his act a lot. Tape Man was good, although like you I wonder what else can he do? Will he be a one trick pony? I certainly hope not because it was entertaining.

The only problem with Laura Bretan is she sings opera. Every year, America is stunned to hear someone who doesn’t look like the stereotypical obese Wagner Valkyrie sing opera, the audience goes wild, the judges are in awe.

Doesn’t change that in no way can you build a Vegas act out of an opera singer (the Three Tenors notwithstanding). If America really loved opera, they’d go to the damn opera.

I did like the hook guy. I assume that the upper jaw on any one would probably be strong enough to support your body weight? Of course, America isn’t going to want to see that as a show either. I loved how Mel voted him through without actually watching his act.

I essentially explained this to Ms. Cups while we were watching the show. The girl will get a lot of press, do well for the first round or two of the audience judge shows, and then eventually lose when we’re tired of her singing opera.

The only way I might think she could get through is because, like Jacque Evancho a couple seasons ago, she is a very pretty girl and that will win her favors for the audience

I agree with the others about Laura; what if that was the only song she knows? Doing a quick search, it turns out her family is from Romania, she’s sung at the Apollo Theater, won the Chicago Bulls Kids Talent Search and is hardly a shy newly-found kid. She DOES have talent, and her performance was moving.

I liked the Tape guy and that he had two parts to his act, making me think he’s got a whole set of routines.

In whole, I’m glad to see it’s back. Simon Cowell seems almost nice on this show (like how Gordon Ramsey becomes a decent person on MasterChef and MasterChef Kids). The show makes me smile, makes me go “huh?” and “wow!” and “that’s so silly it’s good”.

The very second I saw hook through nose guy and his assistant I said to my wife “freak show act”. I knew he was going to put a hook through his skin or his nose. Lol. Not a fan.

We might be surprised by Laura. Maybe she’ll be one of the lucky few that can turn her big voice on to something more popular.

What he did was take a few bits of old time vaudeville/burlesque and perform them brilliantly. He should be able to glean a great many more nuggets and use them to high comic effect.

The term for the act is “blockhead” in Carny circles. I’m not a fan either, but he did it well enough.

Hara was good, but we’ve seen a lot of live action/video mix now, he’ll have to keep raising the bar.
Laura Breton has an amazing voice, she can win, but she has to do more than just sing opera.
Tape Guy was very good. If he’s got more he’s going far.
Hook Guy can keep going for a while but judges won’t stay with him.

Tape Guy has the potential to be awesome. He was able to make oven mitts come to life, be expressive, and tell a story. I hope he has a lot of depth and can keep it interesting.

The kid comedian was also pretty good. What confidence for a 6-year-old!

The problem with Tape Man and Hook Guy is, they seem to be the kind of act that gets a reasonably good response in the first round, only to go to Vegas and be told pretty much on the airport tarmac, “We put you through? What were we thinking? Sorry, you’re out; get on the next plane back to where you came from.”

Why isn’t the show on tonight?

It is on tonight, at 8PM on NBC. If you were asking why it wasn’t on yesterday night you did it a minute too late.
