I just notice that Fighting Gravity was the only act I picked for all three categories. Hmm
Fighting Gravity are the guys in the dayglo suits? They’re way too cool. Also loved the tappers, natch. None of the singers really did it for me – glad they called lounge guy on his cheese, though.
Hate the little kids. I hate all little kids on all these shows. Give them a separate show. (Bring back Star Search! Didn’t they have a separate category for kids? Plus spokesmodel – how lame was that?)
The problem with the kids, and what I hope America sees too, is that they’re SO young that they are actually not very very good.
They are good at what they do, for their age, but the youngest (black 5 year old) is really sloppy because…he’s 5. If the older kid (asian 10 year old) were by himself it would be different…but the younger is so young he just doesn’t have control.
I do not like the approach they are using.
How are we suppose to compare singers to jugglers to Kung Fu artists to dancers to a whistler to a bunch of [del]idiots[/del] guys pretending to play musical instruments.
They should have had, as much as possible, similar acts on any given night.
For the record, my choice is with Fighting Gravity, everybody else can go home.
Fighting Gravity - they are the ONLY act I think could get a show in Las Vegas and do well (as Blue Man Group has done).
Airpocalypse - they just crack me up. Remind me of a bunch of slackers - assuming they are married, can you see the wives’ faces as they shake their heads and walk away from the garage?! They are just so - so insanely stupid, but cleverly stupid, that I like them! Would I pay to see them 90 minutes in a show? Hell no. But I think they would make a hysterically funny opening act for a real rock group on tour! Geez - every kid has done the same at home listening to their favorite rock group - granted, the difference is kids stop doing it when they are old enough to shave - but hey, that is what makes this so silly and fun.
This was the first time I have ever voted on any of these types of shows, and I’ll admit I threw most of my votes toward RNG, because I figured they would need the most help out of the acts I liked. I gave one to Fighting Gravity, because it was the only act out of all of them I would actually pay to see, but they had better come up with something a little different for the next round, or I might get bored.
I was not impressed with any of the singers this week, but I doubt my dream of seeing all of them voted out will not come to pass.
I hate to sound like an old grouch, but I couldn’t stand Future Funk. I give them props for trying, but seriously, they were not very good. I was more entertained by Airpocalypse than those two. I think they’re in because of the, “Awe, how cute.” factor.
RNG has a dance quality that, yeah, I’m not hip to the kids nowadays, but a synchronicity in how they pop their moves together that has them fascinating to watch. Agreed on Future Funk where the little one can’t pull off half his moves because his body is too small.
Still, to make the judges decide between the two is punishing.
What a horribly produced results show. They have an hour of airtime, and yet fill it with so much bullshit and repeated footage from last night, that my DVR cut off before they even announced who got the 4th spot. Did it even air on TV at all or did the show just end? Last I hear was Nick shouting “15 seconds!” and then it ended. RNG or Future Funk? (My vote would go to RNG.)
Why did the judges have to pick the 4th one anyway? I thought America chose the top four. If they were groups 4 & 5 in the rankings, then why didn’t #4 automatically go through?
Because otherwise their VERY IMPORTANT JUDGES would have absolutely nothing to do.
I’m trying to figure out the format of this show.
48 in the quarter finals, 4 shows of 12.
Four winners from each going to the semis – 16? What, are they going to go to three hours? Or, more likely, they’ll figure out how to add in a bunch more “Judge’s Choice” or wild cards to turn it into two shows?
Seems an awkward number.
I liked RNG way better than Future Funk. They were fun to watch and better dancers.
Aside from that… things went pretty much as I would have expected. Fighting Gravity is pretty awesome. The cute young dude singer is not my favorite of the cute young dude singers, but I’m not at all surprised that he went through. Christina and Ali are… meh. average.
Everything went as I predicted except for RNG losing. I wonder if they would have won if America had made the choice.
I’d have chosen the tap dancers over the singing kids, but I am not surprised at America’s choice. Like you, choosing Future Funk over RNG was a travesty.
I agree on both, but I understand it doesn’t really matter. Out of the 12 acts, RNG came in at either 4th or 5th, and the tap dancers at 6th or lower, which means they had effectively zero chance of being the final winner. If they aren’t in the top few out of 12, why would they suddenly be #1 out of 48?
At least, I’ve never heard of any, ah, intermediate prizes. As in, every act that makes the semifinals gets $xxxx and the ones that gets into the finals gets another $yyyyy? It seems to be winner takes all. So going out at this level rather than the next only means one less week to dream/agonize over the outcome.
And, of course, we don’t get to watch their performance another time. Which is why really the only part of the results that mattered to me was Fighting Gravity going on. I don’t see where else they can go with that act but I’m really curious to see.
Howie wasted a few more seconds apologizing to the girls, before finally shouting “Future Funk!” at the last possible second. The music played for less than a second and the show immediately went to the closing title card and ended.
I had really been looking forward to seeing another performance by Fighting Gravity but had to grudgingly agree with my son when he said “Since we know now how they do it it’s not* as *great.” Maybe with the resources of the show behind them they can develop something different enough to win it all but right now I’m a little nervous for them. To be clear, I’m not trying to imply I could do better. It’s just that I was blown away by them the first time, and last night I just really really liked them.
For me RNG’s biggest strength is their impeccable precision which got buried in silly costumes. I would rather have seen another performance from them or the hot Shots Tap Dancers (my own preference) rather than Future Funk. I also think watching their eventual elimination will be more painful to watch the further they go in the competition.
It was nice of them to give Nick Pike a chance to apologize and save face a little.

Over-all, not too bad. My favorites were almost all of the singers:
[ol]
[li]Alice Tan Ridley - She’ll have a career, even if she doesn’t win the show. She’s just too good not to.[/li][li]Michael Bolton…I mean Grimm.[/li][li]A tie between AscenDance and Hannibal Means.[/li][li]A tie between The Strong Man and Mona Sampath Dance.[/li][/ol]
Close seconds:
[ol]
[li]Wreckless - Pretty good, but I wasn’t wowed by this performance.[/li][li]Lil Chris - Great performer, but I think he needs to wait a few more years.[/li][li]Antonio Restivo - Not bad, just needs a little work in my opinion.[/li][/ol]
Go Home:
[ol]
[li]Cheer SF - Too many people, boring performance.[/li][li]Iron Horse - I agreed with the judges, too many gaps in the performance.[/li][li]Ronith - Horrible. Howie truly is insane.[/li][/ol]
Do you think Howie really thinks/thought that Ronith was some sort of Andy Kaufman-esque naked emperor comic genius? Or is Howie the genius for making us think he thought that?
I’d pay for an evening of AscenDance long before I’d buy a ticket for Hannibal’s show.
I agreed with Piers about the Strong Man to a point. I don’t know how much of that “LA Parking” nonsense was his idea and how much was the producers’. I think some of the costumes and props are hurting act more than helping. Flipping over a car isn’t really that interesting to watch. I’d stop and watch it at the state fair, but not a whole show probably.
The most interestng and talented thing about Hannibal was those hats he crocheted.
