I haven’t read the book, although I’ve read Steven Kaplan’s article debunking it, FWIW. But that’s neither here nor there.
There’s a scene where Mrs. Lutz (Margo Kidder) is freaking out and trying to contact her priest, and all she gets on her phone is static. Then there’s a knock at the door, and it’s her neighbor, welcoming her to the neighborhood and holding a six-pack of beer. Something distracts Mrs. Lutz (I don’t remember what) and she excuses herself to go attend to it, and when she comes back the neighbor is gone.
What is that scene trying to tell me? Did something spook the neighbor and he fled? Did Mrs. Lutz hallucinate him?
