Amy the Elephant

We went to Riddle’s Elephant Sanctuary Saturday, and have news for Amy the person. Please email me.
Maximus the baby African is now taller than the elephant keeper. He weighs just over a ton now. Cool.

I saw a story on the Discovery Channel (I think it was) about an elephant rescue preserve in Africa. It was very interesting and actually rather touching.

I had no clue there was such a thing in Arkansas, though. That is rather nifty and mad props to them.

There is also one in the neighboring state of Tennessee but they are more of a PETA approach; hands off, no males, no visitors. They do have a cool elephant cam, though. Riddle has males and is indeed breeding elephants. Riddle needs donations more than the Tennessee folks. There are only 20,000 Asian elephants alive in the world. No herd of Asians numbers over 100, which means that they are in trouble.

'Tis a very good thing they’re doing. If I remember correctly, the elephant rescue in Africa was run almost like a school. Elephants are amazing critters and much smarter and more empathetic than their exteriors would initially suggest.

It does sound like a good deal. Do they have a preserve for them?
The problem with returning elephants to Africa is that they are killing them. A government moves some people away from their tribal lands and soon elephants begin raiding their garden and destroying their livelihood. The government responds by killing the elephants. That’s what happened to Amy. Her herd was “culled” which with aquarium fish means destroying the inform and ugly, but in her case meant killing her mother, all her sisters and aunts; she was the only survivor.

How much does the elephant weigh?

Thanks for the link. I only knew about the tennesse location.

I have sent an eMail to you directly. Thanks for the heads up on whatever it is!

Amy (duh!)

On their web cam last week I saw a female Asian standing in a pasture contemplating five white tailed deer walking across our field of view.
One of the coolest things I’ve seen, certainly on a web cam.

I believe the preserve I was talking about has a website. It’s here .

I wish I weren’t unemployed. So many worthy things to donate my time and money to sigh.

Thanks for the link.
I don’t think my $10.00 a month fee to visit at Riddle’s buys very much hay. :frowning:
