An Absolutely True Story

So this weekend I was in Cleveland visiting my parents, and I read the local paper, the Plain Dealer. In an article about Iraq, I came across the following quote, attributed to Senator Tom Daschle: “The evil ones now find themselves in crisis, and this is God’s will for them.”

Right away, I think this has to be a mistake. Someone like Daschle would never use that kind of inflated, pseudo-religious rhetoric. But, I do remember that someone in the U.S. government with the initials G.W.B. is always yammering on about the “evil ones”.

Today I’m over at fark.com and I see a link saying that the quote was indeed misattributed, but it didn’t say to whom. I think to myself, “I knew it! It was Bush all along.”

Then I followed the link, and it turns out that it wasn’t Bush at all, but rather a voice on a tape claiming to be Saddam Hussein.

Interpretation is left to the reader.

The problem with this whole business of War on Terrorism is that both sides consist principally of uncompromising, intolerant fanatics. Thus, from the viewpoint of a more rational and critical observer, the rhetoric of either side begins to sound indistinguishable from the other, especially in the absence of any specific clues as to the culture of origin.

The Plain Dealer attributed a quote from Saddam Hussein to Daschle?

How the hell did that happen?
