I was looking through a friend’s issues of JLA a few days ago, and I saw, along with Superman, Batman, Martian Manhunter and the rest, an angel. What in the heck was going on? He’s knocking a meteor out of the sky while saying something like “Christ give me strength!” Was DC trying to make its stuff more palatable to people who might not ordinarily read? I don’t have a problem with faith in comics, but I don’t think an angel alongside two aliens and an Amazon princess works well. I mean, if there’s angels, why do they need Superman? Could someone (Master Fenris, perhaps?) explain the thinking here?
You sure it’s not Hawkman?
Or even Angel and the Ape?
That was Zauriel. He’s an angel who was a member of the JLA for a while. He decided to become mortal because he fell in love with a woman. He also found out that one of the higher ranking angels was planning another revolt. He actually wasn’t a bad character. Religious but not too pious.
He’s another one of Grant Morrison’s . . . um . . . unique superheroes. I didn’t really care for him, but then again, I hate most things. I believe, and Fenris can undoubtedly correct me, the he was created because of the screwed up status of Hawkman when Morrison was writing JLA. Morrison wanted a winged character for his weird Greek mythological symmetry and created Zauriel to fill the hole.
photopat and JDeMobray’s memory matches mine. I kinda liked the character, though.
Before they screwed his costume up.
