An auto mechanical question regarding a 1995 Jimmy.

I have a 1995 Jimmy and have had a few minor problems with it recently.

OK, there is power steering in a car and there is also something that is comparable to power breaks. It makes pressing the breaks easier. Now, the “power breaks” went out in my Jimmy and I started hearing a hissing noise down by the pedals. I can’t see anything, but it’s obviously some sort of vacuum leak.

Now, ever since this happened, I have to press the breaks really hard (similar to an old car that has no power anything in it, everything is hard to do, even steer) to get it to stop.

The problem is though, at night time, when I press the breaks, the headlights dim a tiny bit until I depress the breaks. This in turn, has some how caused my alternator to cease to work. I installed a new one and three weeks later, you got it, the alternator was gone again. I got the third one free of charge and it’s been going strong for two months now. I just haven’t had the money to get the break trouble looked at.

What could be causing this electrical problem due to my breaks?

The vehicle does have power brakes. The hissing noise is almost certainly a leaking power brake booster. The booster is powered by engine vacuum.

I doubt there’s an electrical problem related to the brakes. The dimming could be caused by the engine idle speed decreasing due to the vacuum leak through the faulty booster and/or the brake lights coming on. I find it more plausible that the first alternator failure was coincidence and the second was a poor quality part.

Good advice from Gary.
OP, I’d be more concerned about the car stopping than the car starting.
Get them brakes looked at asap!

Gary T, I agree. I even said to myself, I bet the whole alternator thing was just coincidence. And I agree, I just need to get the damn thing looked at. But the breaks work, I just have to press hard to get it to stop. But thanks ! Think it’ll be expensive to fix, Gary?

I’m guessing booster replacement would be in the 200-400 range.
