An invitation to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to suck my ass

Bob Seger made it in, but still no Electric Light Orchestra?

Bob fucking Seger? Bob like a cock Seger?

You have got to be fucking kidding me!

Bob Seger wishes he had 1/100th the talent of Jeff Lynne.

Who’s next? Night Ranger?

Awww, Sister Christian!
Well, he did give us Turn The Page.

It’s a sham until Black Sabbath gets in. I’m not holding my breath.

…and this is good how?

Metallica’s cover sucked far less ass than your average Hilllary Duff single.

Hey! Don’t be too hard on them. They must be doing something right because they were just given $350,000 to educate young people about rock n roll.

Oh, the old “we’ll-give-to-charity-and-the-needy-to-cover-up-our-suckassedness” routine, eh?

I mean, really, BOB SEGER?

Not meaning to rain on your parade (seeing as I’m an ELO fan as well,) but what exactly has Jeff Lynne and the gang contributed to rock and roll? As I see it, after Out Of The Blue was released, and Lynne grabbed hold of full creative control of the band, they went from their cutting edge neoclassical-rock legacy to a new synth-pop sound that…well…um…ate large amounts of donkey wang? At least Seger was able to keep true to his sound.

The entire idea of a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is ludicrous; no set of selections could ever make sense. The entire POINT of rock 'n roll is to rebel against institutions. And you’re honoring them by inducting them into an institution?

Man, this is an organization that picked the Mamas & the Papas and Bonnie Rait over Steely Dan and the Talking Heads. Who waited until their 7th year to add Jimi.

And most damning, they put Rod Stewart in. And not just that, but in the year before the Allman Bros, Zepplin, Janis, Zappa, Neil Young. I mean, clearly it’s just a worthless CD promotion gimmick and nothing better.

Bob Seger did squeeze the rock-and-roll-nostalgia thing a bit too hard, but hey…“Night Moves”.

As for ELO, they should have turned down the FRUITY CRAPLOAD knob on their synthesizer once in a while.

Is Chicago in yet? If they ain’t, they should be. That’s all I’m sayin’.

Hey, the Moody Blues aren’t in. Eligible since what 1990? I doubt they ever will… ELO, well… poop. I bet, uhm, Culture Club gets in first!

And that which critics call Corporate Rock (whatever that means) has zero chance. Boston, Journey, Foreigner, REO, Styx, Kansas - did I miss one?

At least the Righteous Brothers got in the same year Bobby Hatfield died!

I read that Chubby Checker is complaining about not being inducted.

RRHOF, get off your ass!

You took the words right out of my mouth Rick. Think about what it’s like for me, as an Australian on the outside looking in. Man, as long ago as 1975 AC/DC wrote one of the all time hard rock masterpieces entitled “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If you wanna Rock’n’Roll)” and the message? It’s a tough life, doing gigs and playing pubs and living vampire hours etc etc etc. It’s a life which, if you choose it, is by it’s very nature an “outlaw” lifestyle. It’s a life which innately is all about telling the world to go and get fucked any old time you want.

And that was a song I grew up with as a teenager you know? So for me to find out that someone in America has started a friggin’ Hall of Fame for rock musicians? I mean seriously… they’re not baseballers… they’re not footballers… they’re just loud outlaws by and large with very loud guitar amps and drum kits. They’re not MIT graduates who mixed with Nobel Laureates for 15 years. They’re not classicly trained thespians who worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company for 15 years. They’re just unwashed, crazy outlaws who like lots of booze, sex, and noise.

And these pathetic attempts to legitimise the rock lifestyle via a self appointed arbiter of good taste which calls itself “A Hall of Fame” which ALSO happens to be based in the home of corporatised music? Well, they can go and shove a pineapple up their arse coz it’s an insult to anyone who has ever heard that AC/DC song I told you about, and who nodded their heads during the song and said “Yeah, I hear you brother…”

Sorry, but I can’t sympathize. ELO? ELO???

Early ELO had its moments, for sure, but turned rapidly into a crap pop band. Jeff Lynne continues to ruin everything he touches, IMO.

Jeff Lynne was in full creative control of the band long before Out Of The Blue.

And I don’t follow what this ‘true to his sound’ nonsense is about. What exactly does that mean? Is that the same as ‘sticking unimaginitively to the same formula’? Or ‘stagnating in past glories’? Or ‘lacking innovation’?

Whether you liked ELO’s musical direction or not is all a matter of opinion, but I don’t think you could argue it was anything but both pop and popular. I think many of the objections here seem to revolve around rock, blue jeans and a geetar, snobbery.

The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is like any other award. Totally subjective and never going to please everyone. If you don’t like it, ignore it.

As for the ‘rock is about rebellion’ argument. Sorry guys, but what do you think recorded, marketed and put the music in the shop for you to buy? Nothing but the same corporate institutions. They’ve always been selling you your ‘rebellion’, they’re just not hiding it anymore.

What? You want to exclude Bob Segar? Pioneer of Folk and Folk-rock? One of the few people that actually had the balls to say “Screw you” to HUAC? The guy who wrote “If I Had A Hammer” and “Where Have All The Flowers Gone”?

How in the world can you want to exclude Bob Se…

What?

PETE Seeger?

Not Bob?

Oh.

:: turns towards audience ::

Nevermind.

ELO backed Olivia Newton-John on “Xanadu”. Need I say more?

Robin

Yeah, but Seger had the equally embarrasing Shakedown from Beverly Hills Cop II. And even then he performed it by himself; he didn’t have ELO’s excuse that they were just campy backup.

Futile Gesture, this is exactly why discussions of the worthiness of art and music give me a pain in the ass. It’s all what you make of it. If you like something, you describe it in favorable words, if you don’t, you describe the exact same motherfucking quality in unfavorable words. It’s nothing but opinions, and who’s to say that anyone else’s opinion is worth more than your own?
That said, I like ELO a hundred times more than Bob Seger.
