I was actually thinking this earlier, but. . . what kind of Coach bag was it? Coach does have oodles and oodles of outlet stores (though, I’m not sure if they are in Canada as well). It might be worth a shot to check out an outlet- you can get bags for up to 75% off. I got a bag that was regularly $600 for $250ish, another that was regularly $300 for $75, etc.
And tremorviolet, it’s not just the Dope. Many of my IRL guy friends don’t even blink at buying another $4000 computer (to add to their other three they’ve bought in the last 2 years) for gaming, but they will roundly mock me for buying a $200 purse or $100 pair of shoes. “It’s not practical, Angel!” they laugh. Uh huh. . .
I’ve noticed that, too. I personally don’t get why people need a video game console, or state of the art computer, but I don’t go into those threads and roll my eyes. Expensive purses, shoes, cosmetics, etc. may be frivolous, but if it’s what we like spending money on, whom does it hurt?
And hey, if we get more male dopers to enjoy girly things, maybe we’ll have fewer “How do I talk to this girl/know she’s interested in me/express interest in her” because guys can just strike up conversations with, “Love your new coach bag!” (Hey, dare to dream!)
This is the closest bag I could find to it, but it’s not the same. Mine had three stripes down the front, one glossy, one suede, and one fake snakeskin. My parents live about an hour and a half away from an outlet, so I’m thinking of going over Christmas, possibly Boxing Day sales.
Yeah, I totally realize it’s a pervasive attitude but the older I get, the more it’s really started to bug me more and more. And some of the comments in this thread are particularly egregious examples. I see it as an annoying remnant of a less egalitarian time when anything women were interested in was automatically “cute” and unimportant.
I’m sorry for the loss of your purse, and everything in it.
I’m not sure why the credit agencies are requiring you to inform in writing. I had my wallet stolen from my purse in my office at work a year and a half ago, and at that time I took care of it by telephone.
Also, be prepared for having to go down to apply to get a new Social Insurance Card in person, and unless they have changed their policies, you’ll have to pay cash for the replacement fee.
We have lots of generous people here. Q.E.D, for example, just sponsored someone in the last day or two. It seemed an appropriate way to help, given what happened to you. It was my pleasure. Welcome to the boards.
Wow that really sucks! Best wishes on getting all your identify info fixed. Why all the hate on the robber’s girlfriend though?
As for the Coach bag, I’m guilty of teasing my female friends about it, but not because I think it’s inherently stupid to attach sentimental value to objects, but because they use it as a sign of superior social status and preppiness. There’s one Japanese friend that I always rib about it, but that’s because in my experience of Japanese culture, there’s no better way of saving “I like you. Let’s fuck” than gifting a Coach bag … Anyway, sorry for possibly potentiating more hijack.
It cost $10, and some pride… getting lectured by the lady about not carrying my SIN on me. :o [

I think that hate was directed moreso to her because she was sitting facing the purse, and I’m pretty convinced that she told her boyfriend it was nice and she wanted it. Especially since they didn’t attempt to use my credit cards or anything. So I’m assuming she asked her boyfriend to start Christmas shopping, and he obliged. And also I was just ranting about the type of people they were, their callousness towards other people, and how they essentially deserve each other.
So the police just called, and they have a suspect and want me to come down and do a line-up to see if I can identify him. I realized that my belongings are probably LOOOONG gone, but I’m pretty excited. One, even if I can’t identify him, it’s going to be so much fun to do a line-up!!! It’ll be very CSI/Law & Order! haha.
I have a degree in Psychology, and I took a course on eyewitness psychology, and did a fairly large research paper on eyewitness confidence, and basically now inaccurate we all are, so I think that is definitely going to psych me out.
