An open letter to all anti-materialist celebrities (lame)

I hear you talk about how materialism is bad. That people should throw off the confines of material possesions. And yet, you continue to have more things than I will ever dream of. If you think materialism is so bad, give everything you own to me, I will be more than happy to accept them. Watching five minutes of Mtv’s “Cribs”, or any other show of that nature makes me sick. Why? Because I am envious and petty.

Celebrities, until you voluntarily give away all your earthly possesions, I do not want to hear you lecture me on the evils of things. So fuck-off you donkey raping shit eaters.

Thank you and have a lovely day.

Huh? Cite? Who are these celebrities? I don’t exactly keep up with entertainment as much as most people, but, offhand, I can’t think of even a single celebrity fond of issuing such sentiments, let alone the deluge of them that you seem to imply exist. Examples, please?

Well, they’re certainly “anti-materialst” in the sense that they are known to go around spouting ill-conceived, poorly reasoned, pseudo-spiritualist, feel-good nonsense…but I don’t think that particular philosophical dichotomy is the sense of “anti-materialist” that the OP is referring to.

If it were, we could just send them a hard copy for either of Libertarian’s 9-page GD threads on materialism and modal logic, and they’d be so befuddled they’d never speak of it again.

One example is that of Madonnna. Her original American Life video was supposed to convey strong anti-war, anti-materialism and anti-fashion industry statements. I don’t have a problem with the anti-war statements, but it’s the anti-materialism that gets me.

If this has been adressed before, I apologize and asks the mods to lock it.

I hadn’t heard of that video, but it sure is a funny example. Heh. The Material Girl herself…

I don’t know which celebrities you are referring to except for Madonna. What did she actually say about materialism?

I have been a compulsive shopper since I was a child. As a result, our house does not have a spare square inch.

If I had it to do over again, I would be very, very choosy when buying anything. I would have just the basics and books and music. I would go for a very uncluttered life. As it is, my possessions own me.

I have never heard a celebrity say I should renounce all material possesions and embrace poverty. I have heard some celebs say that we, as a culture, are a little too materialistic and might do well to focus more important and lasting things(religion, family, the state of the world).
Ya know what? They may have a point.

Zoe- Bullpoo! Your house would just be full of the basics and books and music (and shelves to hold the books & equipment to play the music). Trust me. I know from my own life. G

(Looking at the 6 ft high stacks of boxes full of books in my bedroom.)

Thank you, spooje.

Having lots of stuff is not bad. Having NICE stuff is not bad. Caring more about your stuff than about your children is bad.
