An outbreak of silly names

Slightly different than the above examples: When parents give a first name that is almost identical to the last. I went to school with a guy named William Williams. There’a tendency here in the south to slur that name anyway, and we mostly called him “Wim Wims.”

Also, I’ve seen cases where people did not know (were not taught) to pronounce their own names. A neighbor of mine was named (or so I thought) Arvil. That’s how he pronounced it. Then one time, I happened to see it printed out on a letter or somesuch. The man’s name was actually Orville.

A guy I was in the Marines with was named Dwayne, but spelled it Dwyne, because the “a” had been left out on his birth certificate.

Never heard of anyone named Vagina, but a grade school teacher of mine was named Regina (pronounced with a long i, instead of “e” sound as most people do), and of course us kids snickered over that.

Another classmate was legally named Joe Jr. Estep, again, he said, because it was typed that way on the birth certificate. Don’t get me started on southern names. I knew so many Biges, Clems, Giles, and one Hilo.

It turns out that the Name-O-Tron is part of the Unusual, Unique, And Creative Names page.

This page has a section called “What are your favorite names?” where you can submit…your favorite names. Here are some highlights:

FROM THE BOYS’ NAMES

**Anakin Grey – this will be the name of my next son, if I have one. It blends well with my other children’s names and it is totally unusual. I imagine a fair skinned, blue eyed boy having this name. **

**Thunder–The name “Thunder” is not on your list of nature names. You may want to consider it. We named our son Thunder and although we were a little hesitant at first (only because our last name was “Holt”), we love it now. **

Uhh…you might have wanted to stay with your original instinct there, folks.

**Xendon–For boys, I would choose the name Xendon. It sounds kind of heroic, a combo of Xander and Brendon. **

“HELLO EARTHLINGS. I AM XENDON. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER.”

Jenuffa–There is one name I have not seen there-or anywhere for that matter. It is JENUFFA. It is my eldest daughter’s name. I found it in the San Francisco Examiner shortly before she was born, 31 years ago. There was a Chek opera playing in town. And this was its name. I believe, but am not certain, that it is the chek pronunciation of JENNIFER. I pronounce it like the French would. “shin’=uf =fa” or pronouncing Jennifer with a southern drawl. It is a very unusual name. I am sure noone else has the name.

Nichollette Allison Lucille Marilyn Theresa This is one of my choices for my second born daughter. I love the name Nichollette because it’s a peaceful sounding name meaning “the people’s victory” and it’s not very popular. I chose the middle name Allison for my best friend Allison, Lucille for Lucille Ball, Marilyn for Marilyn Monroe, and Theresa for Mother Theresa.

…and Karen for my mom and Mabel for the school secretary and Frank for the pizza guy and…

Oy Lavae.

Shatley–Shatley Springs is a town in the Northern mountains of NC. I saw in written on a sign, and it struck me as a pretty and original sounding name that could be used for either a boy or a girl, although to me it sounds more like a name for a girl.

Or the past tense of Shitley.

Stannleaigh nice for a girl because it more unsual. more unusual spelling as well

“Stanley? Is that you?”

Tamsin–Anyway my all time favorite girls name is Tamsin. I fell in love with it when I read Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy in high school. Since I’ve married an Englishman, I’d like the the child to be aware of her English heritage. Tamsin seems so English. I would call her Tamsie as her nickname.

Gee, I wonder what her schoolyard nickname’s gonna be?

Tymbraleigh–Similar to Kimberly, yet different enough to be considered unique.

Unagh–I love the name Unagh (or Una) because it’s unusual but pronounceable…

UnaGH??

Uriana It’s Greek for “The Unknown”, and the name sounds mysterious, too. I don’t know anyone with that name and I’m kinda glad because it’s a name that I’m going to use for my child.

Ya gonna call her “PeePee” for short?

I knew a Lorenza Stetzenmeyer! A Mauro Ganirion! A Leonard Garcia! I am of Hispanic desent and my sisters are Lydia, Virginia and Cynthia, while my brother is Reynaldo! His son is Reynaldo the third. Sounds majestic, doesn’t it? I taught preschool and I’m so afraid little Darci and Kayla won’t ever be elected to the Supreme Court, or that Kaweah and Sequoia won’t have careers outside of Greenpeace…but Krushungi and Krishnaya’s names won’t fit on their namebadges whatever they do.

What’s everyone’s take on other nationalities becoming so enculturated (if that’s a word) into America, that their names tend to loose any of the rich flavor of their original country/heritage. One example that has always struck me, being a former Marine, is the man who was the most famous of the six flag-raisers on Iwo Jima. A proud Pima Indian from Bapchule, Arizona, named Ira Hamilton Hayes.

A lot of guys I know who are first-generation immigrants to America tend to keep their last name but arbitrarily adopt an English first name, perhaps one that vaguely sounds like their original first name (Mike for Miquad), often they say to avoid people constantly mispronouncing the original.

Sir

Green Bean - that was hands down the funniest thing I’ve read in weeks! Are people really this stupid? Holy fuck! I can’t believe someone would name their child Tymbraleigh! Or Thunder Holt! Thunder Holt?!

I read a study a few years back that found that people with oddly spelled names were less popular. I think the kids may hate them because of their stupid fucking parens.

I’ve known a Champagne Love, a Shawantay Perry, a Tracy Tracey (she’s in my Shakespeare class) and a Montella Morton. My cousin worked in a dentist’s office with a woman named PAHjahmah Chiquita, spelled Pajama. She said her mom saw it in the Sears’ catalog and thought it was pretty.

I’m personally fond of classic names. Hannah, Natalie, Noah, Jeremy. I would never be so cruel to my unborn child as to name her “Uriana.” Really, most names that end in “-ey” sound stupid and cheesy to me.

Oh, and the girl who lives above me is named Echo. It wouldn’t be so bad, really, if her last name wasn’t Love.

I swear this is true.

I was once coding a stack of reports when I found a patient by the name of Cocaine. I called the hospital and asked them to confirm that this patient was, in fact, named Cocaine. They did.

Geez.

Robin

This is probably a widespread practise, but I don’t really know.

In modern Maori, for some reason instead of naming your child a perfectly respectable Maori name (if you so desire) there are all these Maori-ised variations of Anglo-Saxon names.

If my name, Paul, was Maori-ised, I’d be Paora. Which would match my Maori surname just fine, but why not name me a genuine Maori name instead? Like Puri, or something?

Anyway, I have an anglo/maori mix due to mixed parentage, I guess. My brother is all Maori, name-wise (Tahu), but my sisters are a combination. Tanea is a Maori-ised version of Tania, and Sandra is just Sandra.

I have no idea where I stand on all this.

Well, I have come across some weird names in my time. I live in an area that is just busting with ex-hippies. I know a set of twins name Sylus Emerald and Omega Amarylus. I also know a guy named “Beyond Endless Joy” I think that it is okay to try and give your kids orginal names, but I think that you should at least make the name pronoucable. A lot of times you here teachers calling role and just slaughtering the poor students names. I feel bad for those poor kids. They just say the correct pronunciation to the offending teacher with such boredom that you just know that they have had to correct every single person who has ever triedto read there names. I must admit that I find it funny when the teacher actually pronounces an unusual name right and the kid says “That’s right!” in the most shocked voice.

Re: Naming a kid Anakin Grey.

I wonder how this poor little guy will like being nicknamed “Annie”. In the movie, Anakin was called “Annie” by his friends. I wonder if this in part led to his…er…attitude problems later in life.

Ummmm…anybody consider it ironic that people called puddleglum, Wozzo, and GuanoLad are contemplating the problems with sily names?

Hey, I resent that remark!
Kinsey…yes, that’s my real name.

The original Celtic Revival started over a hundred years ago in Ireland and Scotland. The modern Celtic revival has been flourishing for the past several years in America. Except that no Americans have bothered to actually learn Gaelic. There is a lot of pseudo-Celtism afoot in America.

The Irish form of the name Katherine is pronounced “Kathleen.” This is an anglicized phonetic spelling of how it’s pronounced in Irish. Kathleen was good enough for earlier generations of Irish-Americans, like the Kennedys.

But now, authenticity is in! You have to revert to the original Gaelic spelling. (Too bad if you haven’t a clue how to pronounce it.) So now America is filled with little Caitlins. Is anyone aware that in Ireland Caitlín is actually pronounced Kathleen? All the Americans pronounce it “Kate-Lynn.” In the original Irish, the accent mark on the second í in Caitlín shows that it’s pronounced with its full vocalic value. Americans ignore accent marks, so the Irish pronunciation is lost.

Well, thanks for listening, I just had to vent.

Jomo Mojo: I was wondering whether I’d be considered unusually well informed or unusually pedantic if I pointed out the actual pronunciation of “Caitlin.” Now I know. You are unusually well informed.

betenoir, you do have a point. Wozzo is actually my nickname around home. (Don’t ask.) It never really struck me as silly, but, as I said, you do have a point. And presumably you know what “bete noir” means (circumflex accent over the first e).

I know a man named Steven Stevenson. Everyone calls him Stevie. Probably was cute when he was a kid.

My next door neighbor named her baby Destiny. To me it just sounds like way too much pressure to put on a little baby.

I think that people should save their unusal names for their pets. Zumba is a great cat name but I certainly not going to name my baby Zumba!

I have a cousin who teases me for considering names like Juliet, Michael and Susannah. Her ideas are: Atticus (from To Kill a Mockingbird), Bennett (she got upset when another cousin used it for her son, as she considers this a girl’s name), Scout (again, from To Kill a Mockingbird), and Dashiell (as in Dashiell Hammett). For years, she liked the name Annakin, since it was not widely known to be Darth Vader’s real name. But ever since “Episode One” came out, she won’t use it because she’s convinced that there will be thousands of little Annakins running around now. The sad part is, I’m afraid she may be right about that

My name (Julianne) used to be original but I am seeing more and more little Juliannes. Teachers can never pronounce it (Julian? Julianna?). My parents didn’t name me it to be trendy (supposedly), it’s a combination my dad’s grandparents Jules and Anna.
If you think that’s bad, I have a cousin name Katriel. A male cousin. (According to my aunt it means “crown of the lord” or some nonsense in Hebrew. Suuuuuuure.)

My real name is Maverick and I love it although it did make my life hell for a couple of years around the time Top Gun came out. I have actually gotten job interviews (and subsequently jobs) because I have an unusual name.

I also went to high school with twin star basketball players named Peaches and Pumpkin. They were two huge males.

GreenBean that was hilarious!

I worked in a hospital billing call center. Our computer would call the number on the bill and say: “You have a bill at UMD, please call this number to settle it.”

So I’d get the call and ask: “Have you or anyone in your household used UMD services?” I once got this answer:

“My daughter Chiquita. Or maybe her sister Bonita”. Good thing the last name wasn’t banana.

“Maybe I’ll Pitch Forever.”
