Oh that would be so sweet. Hell, if they do a gofundme, I’ll donate to it.
If they’ll keep selling 12-packs, I’ll “donate” regularly. In exchange for beer of course. Capitalism / commercialism is like that.
Got a six of Anchor Steam and a six of Anchor Porter from the local Beverage Barn.
Through a long series of misadventures, I acquired, lost, and re-acquired one of the last six packs of Anchor Steam beer for sale. I’m now down to my last bottle. However, before it’s consumed, I’d like to know the status of any efforts to save the Anchor Brewing Company.
You may as well go ahead and enjoy that last one…

According to a statement, Anchor — which closed in July after 127 years in operation — donated vintage signs, brewing equipment, artwork, pint glasses and other artifacts to the San Francisco Historical Society, which is planning an exhibit of Anchor items.
The brewing company donated charts, photos, blueprints and business records, among other items, to the Smithsonian.
The article also mentions a group of employees and their long-shot bid to buy the company.
If that’s the case, maybe I’ll hold on to it for a little longer.
I hope you enjoy it before it goes skunky.
San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Co. property officially up for sale
Know anyone who wants to buy an historic, commercial brewery?
This is a much smaller scale, but there’s a microbrewery closing/opening in Portland that demonstrates one way to do this right. The owners had moved to New Mexico and opened a new outpost there, and didn’t want to manage the original one remotely. So they put it up for sale, and were thoughtful about who they’d sell to. The new owners plan to keep the general feel of the old location. They hired the former brewers. And they plan to keep brewing a couple of the favorite former brewery’s beers alongside their own.
I don’t know how that would work for a national brand like Anchor, but it would be really nice if someone figured out a way.
Bumping this thread with some good news - Anchor Brewing bought by yogurt billionaire:
Nearly a year after parent company Sapporo shuttered America’s oldest craft beer company, 51-year-old billionaire Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and CEO of yogurt maker Chobani, said he’s reviving the San Francisco brand in an Instagram video posted Friday morning.
Ulukaya’s purchase of the brewery for an undisclosed amount includes all assets of Anchor, including its Potrero Hill factory, brewing equipment and intellectual property.
Man, for once the news of the day (or two) has me feeling good, especially going into the weekend. Cheers!
That is good news. Excellent.
I updated the thread title.
Will they have regular yogurt beer and Greek yogurt beer?
So he purchased the old factory, but I wonder if they’re going to actually brew the beer there. I mean, that is a valuable piece of San Francisco real estate. I could imagine reviving the Anchor brand, but brewing it elsewhere, possibly contracting with some other brewery, and doing something like converting the old factory to housing (something San Francisco desperately needs more of).
Actually, IMO a beer flavored yogurt doesn’t sound all that bad.
I’d drink yoghurt-flavored beer. Kefir spiked with vodka is tasty!
I’ll wait until there’s product to taste but I will be cautiously optimistic. I do hope they bring back the old labels.
Yay, yay, yay!! Very glad to hear it!!
Wonderful news. The last time I lived in Ottawa, 20 years ago, the LCBO (Ontario’s liquor seller) sold it. I hope that they bring it back.
I saw a news story on local news this evening about this, and they seemed pretty definite that the intention was to hire back most of the staff and start putting out Anchor Steam and other Anchor beers again. There was speculation about a new logo or a reversion to the old logo, and stuff like that.
That’s cool, I think the last Anchor I had was a circa 2018 Christmas magnum while completely snowed in Christmas 2021. Would be nice to see them back and the bottles were iconic.
So uh, do you just mix it together? I put kefir in coffee once and it curdled, never again.
One “yoghurt beer” familar with is Mongolian/Turkish-style koumiss; it is made from horse milk and has a pretty low alcohol content. It is then distilled into local moonshine, but if you know where to get Mongolian milk vodka outside Mongolia let me know…
It isn’t mixed with vodka, as far as I know, it’s actually distilled from fermented milk:
Yep. No different than spiking eggnog.
