Courtney Love went to my grandmother’s old high school. No, it wasn’t the one in Olympia it was Nelson Girls College in New Zealand. It’s the only connection with a celebrity I’m ever likely to have although that’s not the reason I’d like to encourage the establishment of a Courtney Love Award.
Wouldn’t it be great if, at each year’s prizegiving, some lucky girl could receive such a prize for…well, that’s the reason for this thread. Personally I’d like to see it gifted to a “difficult” girl who could go far if only she could afford makeup and a few piercings. What do you think? What should it be for? And have any rock stars actually ever done this? Is there an Alice Cooper award to be won for instance? This is all serious, all genuine and about my grandmother, all true.
A long time ago someone did a thread asking for addresses of the sicker sites on the internet. Someone suggested bangedup.com and that was the first time I’d heard of that site. It seems to be run by two guys called Sick Bastard and Mr Rotten who, I’d have to say, have patented the word “crass” although in an entertaining kind of way if you like that sort of thing. I look through their photo collections now and again - it’s an insight into how men think. The stuff on their site about towelheads and ragheads etc got me wondering about the Salman Rusdie fatwah situation though. Post September 11 who gets a fatwah and who doesn’t? I once threatened sacred Moslem artifacts here. Will I, along with Sick Bastard and Mr Rotten, be getting stumps in the future or not?
What this is about is Courtney Love. On Bangedup.com right now Mr Rotten and Mr Bastard are alleging in no uncertain terms that she killed Kurt Cobain. They don’t seem to be joking. It’s accusing rather than alleging and they’re seem quite aggressive. I don’t really mind that I didn’t receive any replies for my Courtney Love thread but I’m very curious to know if I’m missing out on something big here. Am I?
It’s been a common suggestion for a while now that Courtney killed Kurt. If you watch the movie Kurt and Courtney it seems to be the entire premise. (Which I totally disagree with.) Most Nirvana fans that I know think she’s the Yoko Ono of the grunge generation and that she got jealous of Kurt’s popularity. I am a huge Nirvana fan, and I love Hole, but I don’t think she killed him. I’ve seen some pretty convincing interviews after his death that she was really torn up about the whole thing.
Now, the fact that she has basically screwed the rest of the bandmembers (Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl) over the box-set thing pisses me off, but I don’t think she killed Kurt. I really liked Kurt, but he had issues and decided that he couldn’t take it anymore, so he killed himself. I’ve noticed that whenever someone kills themselves, someone always wants to point the blame at someone, and in this case they point at Courtney.
Is it possible that the Courtney Love accusations come from a refusal to believe that anyone like Cobain would want to kill themselves? Just from a lack of empathy? A lot of people spend their whole lives craving the things he had in the belief that if they had them too everything would be completely different. My guess is that people like Cobain stay the same inside in lots of ways. Also, he seemed to be a little weirder than a lot of stars right from the start. He covered his face with his hair in videos and photographs a lot of the time for one thing.
People would not kill themselves if their lives could be fixed and everyone who knows a person who suicides must take responsibility for not doing the fixing. That’s the way I see it anyway.
