My cohorts and I did visit an abandoned mental hospital today. We explored the Old Torrance Mental Hospital (Google it) near Blairsville PA. Those who went before us were liars and poltroons. Neither hard to find nor particularly sinister. Rotting buildings we, in broad daylight, drove up to. Clearly visible from the road. Parked in front. Ran hither and yon. To and fro.
Urbex is my new obsesion. This place was less than a dry run.
What a disappointment.
I came in here wondering what Uban Exploring was, and what was this Uban that was so interesting to explore. Not to worry … Why’d you decide to go looking around an abandoned mental hospital, Scumpup?
I’ve always wanted to do that! Please give reports if you visit any cool ones!
Back in highschool my friends and I decided it would be fun to spend the night in an abandoned mental hospital somewhere in the vicinity of Green Bay, WI. Creepy. I think we were divided in what we were concerned about. Ghosts and dormant tuberculosis germs. Much alcohol was required to keep us safe. Great times!
I think it’s spelled Yuban.
There are these guys.
Cool. Thanks Beware of Doug and carnivorousplant. I love ratting around in places like those. Abandoned shards of civilisation. You’re lucky up there you have so much.
I love looking at urban exploration websites! Keep us updated if you go anywhere interesting.
Now that I am less sleepy, a few details of the trip.
In contrast to what one might gather from this site, the place isn’t the least bit hard to find. It’s right across the road from the new hospital and in plain sight. It was disappointingly small. There were three small wings, wards originally I suppose, and a basement that we were able to visit. The second story in the main wing was so obviously unsafe that we didn’t even try to go up. All wooden parts of the structure were pretty far along in decay. The brick parts of the structure look as sound as the day it was built.
The place apparantly sees a lot of traffic, mostly kids. Every wall is covered with grafitti. There wasn’t much other vandalism because there isn’t much to vandalize. Paintball splats were visible here and there and the place was surprisingly free of debris. It seems likely that a local group of paintballers cleaned things up a bit so they could (unauthorizedly?) use the place as a funhouse. Despite every window in the place being broken, there was no broken glass on any of the floors, for example.
I don’t believe in ghosts or other supernatural things, so I wasn’t expecting to see anything of the type. One of my companions is a believer in such things and even claims an ability to sense the presence of spirits. He didn’t “feel” anything, even in the supposedly very haunted furnace room.
We got some pictures which I shall be putting on a website. I will link to it when they are up.
Right now, we are trying to find a spot for the next safari. One guy wants to go to Centralia, PA and see the remains of that town. I’m not too enthusiastic. There isn’t enough left of the place to bother with it. If any of you Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, or West Virginia Dopers have anything interesting in your area, I’d appreciate hearing about it.
