Ooh I’m excited now! I was so pleased it wasn’t the one from the Xmas special - my auntie told me it was going to be him and I watched the whole thing with a look of disgust. Wasn’t impressed.
It still could be David Morrisey; Doctor starts the regen, thinks "well, that bloke looked decent enough in a cravat, wellllll why naaaaaaaught!"
Any UKers want to start with the speculations?
Digitalspy says Paterson Joseph…I think he’d be awesome. He’s superb in Peep Show. There’s speculation about some skinny-balinkey called Ben Wishaw, but my vote is for Paterson. He’s got the twinkle in his eye.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0430667/
No buzz on James Nesbitt any more?
James Nesbitt is behind with the bookies - 15/1, equal with Chiwetel Ejiofor. Robert Carlyle is on 9/1, whereas ole PJ is on 7/17 and apparently bookies aren’t taking bets on him anymore because they think it’s a dead cert.
He’s good, excellent in Peep Show and he’d make a good Doctor (IMHO). Eccentric, but sober, more like Peter Davison perhaps?
I’ve heard rumour that it could be a relative unknown, but I could imagine Moffat going for one of his Coupling blokes.
My current top three choices would be Richard Coyle (who is one of the Coupling blokes), Richard Ayoade and - possible odd pick here - David Mitchell.
So we can look forward to the good Doctor setting straight to potential Companions that he does not have a bucket of ears?
So, according to IMDB, Paterson Joseph was in Doctor Who already, as Rodrick(?) in Bad Wolf and the Parting of the Ways. Can anyone refresh my memory about who that character was? Or was he so incidental I won’t remember him? I think I need to watch those episodes again…
Oh, man. Richard Coyle playing the Doctor as Jeff would be several levels of awesome.
“Doctor, what’s wrong?”
“I’ve got too many legs!”
On preview:
Paterson Joseph was the bloke playing The Weakest Link alongside Rose in those episodes.
David Mitchell…bit of a wild card. I’m going to have to think about that. I think he would be an unpopular choice, he’s too much like Marmite in that people love him or hate him. I love him, but I love him as a panel show regular and as Mark Corrigan, not as a timelord. At this exact moment of typing the TV advert has come on where David Mitchell is the voice of a drug mule dog!
I love Richard Ayoade in IT Crowd and Mighty Boosh, I don’t know how well he would transfer in to the Who role. I think he’s too niche.
Yeah, I’m sticking with Paterson, I agree with you Pushkin, he’d be smooth with it as well. I wasn’t very old when Peter Davidson was Who, but he was one of my first TV crushes :o
I love David Mitchell beyond words, but I don’t think he’d make a very good Doctor. Besides, he’d have to give up panel shows, and that would be tragic. Richard Ayoade I could see, for some reason.
Paterson Joseph has been my favorite for a few months, but I won’t be upset if it’s not him, as long as it’s someone interesting.
I really hope he doesn’t get it. He can only play one role “I’m a smarmy git from Northern Ireland with a lascivious twinkle in my eye. Begorrah”
He ruins every light entertainment thing he’s ever in.
If Richard Coyle gets it, I double dog dare Steve Moffatt to invent a fearsome new Who baddy called The MeltyMan.
Of those mentioned so far Chiwetel Ejiofor is my pick. But if I was in charge, I’d ask Catherine Tate to give it a whirl.
The talk around the TV on Christmas day at my folks’ house is that they would all hate a woman doctor. Their reasoning? I have no memory for sci-fi details but it is something along the lines of citing a fact that the Doctor can’t regenerate into a woman…
I feel a bit guilty that as a woman I should be gunning for Catherine Tate(and I do think she is the bee’s knees), but I’m not that taken with the idea of a female doctor. Not sure why.
I’ve heard bookies have taken bets on Jennifer Saunders.
I doubt it’ll be a woman. In the interview clip, Tennant refers to the new Doctor as a chap and says the role will change his life.
Could always have Tate done up as a bloke, mind.
“What, dear? Dalek, dear? No, dear.”
I don’t care who the next Doctor is*, as long as Sally Sparrow is the next companion.
*Well, I do, but I knew nothing of Tennat beforehand and he’s turned out to be my favourtie Doctor, even surpassing Tom Baker
I see that somebody called Matt Smith is now odds-on favourite on Betfair, FWIW
He looks a bit young, though…
I just want to be the first to declare that the new Doctor sucks and the show is ruined forever because of them changing my preference for Doctors.
Just trying to beat the rush…
Agreed on both counts!
